The dangers of de-policing — will cops just stand down?
NY Post ^ | May 5, 2015 | Randy Sutton

The death of yet another NYPD officer, killed in the line of duty after an incident this weekend, offers more proof that police officers across America are under siege.

Our nation stands at a crossroads. De-policing would deal a win to thugs, vigilantes and criminal opportunism. The public must stand against the conditions that force cops to consider such a radical move.

Our belief in “justice for all” is what prevents tyranny and anarchy. Acknowledging that cops deserve justice and respect, no less than criminals do, will preserve a system that, while imperfect, keeps Americans safe. It’s time we defended the shield.

Back in the 80’s there was a Love Boat episode about a couple of folks that got on the cruise with the idea that one of them would get a minor injury of some sort and then they’d sue the cruise line and life fat the rest of their lives. At the time I thought, this business of us getting more and more litigious will not end well.

And here we are. I admit that I didn’t expect the challenges we are facing regarding a terrified police department, but I’ve had so many “I didn’t expect it to get THIS bad” moments over the last 40 years that, though I may not expect the particular lunacy du-jur, I’m no longer surprised.

And anyone living in a blue area should put “get CCW” on the top of their to-do list. Not only is protecting yourself more up to you than ever, but the “other side” will feel empowered to exploit what they perceive to be a weakness. But the truth is that if we don’t depend on the police, it could quickly become open season on criminals, resulting in the crime rate going DOWN after the initial peak.

If I were a cop I would resign. Bush started the disrespect when he threw border agents under the bus. Obama has made law enforcement a bad choice of careers. I am no fan of police but they would have to be insane to work in today’s PC climate. Border agents are baby sitting human traffickers. FBI are shock troops to find “hate” crimes. And Local police forces are now all labeled as KKK members who just go around killing blacks.

It’s time for the cops to investigate the corrupt politicians they work for.

They’ll “stand down” while the rioters/zombies have the upper hand.
When the property owners start defending their property,
THEN the police will step in.

Never let the government unionize against you, especially the police and fire.

Disagree. Police officers across the ghettos are under siege. De-policing would deal a win to thugs, vigilantes and criminal opportunism. Yeah? Maybe we should totally de-police the ghettos and let the ferals loot and burn the shizzit outta places like Ferguson and Baltimore and see who cares.

We no longer have an age of Andy Griffith (or even Barney Fife).

“Smarter policing” may still be possible in principle. Whether it is possible in practice — relationships are so strained and fragile today, it might not be.

Part of that is realizing the role of 2nd amendment freedoms. A sufficiently skilled, maintained, drilled, ready [all of this is implied in the archaic term “regulated”] private body of arms bearers. Places like Baltimore handicap themselves with private arms restrictions that are based more on abstract fears than reason.

Better to go on the Detroit model. OK, there are few police and far, but it’s quite permissive on private arms and even the police chief recommends private packing.

Back in the Old West we had a local sheriff and or a Federal Marshall who took care of most everything. They might have had one deputy if the town could afford it. However, every adult male open carried and basically knew how and when to act. Crime rate was much much lower then. Jus’ sayin’.

There weren’t any prolonged uncontrolled armed fracases that way. And to loot and burn would be unthinkable....

Once upon a time the idea of having a standing police force was considered a sign of societal doom. At this point when you’re as likely to get killed by the cops serving a warrant on the wrong address as you are by the criminals the cops are supposed to catch that consideration might be accurate. There aren’t very many problems cops are actually solving anymore, half the time when we call them they ask why we’re calling them.

That was my thought after Ferguson. If they don't care, why should we.

Wonder if ghetto citizens would change if they have to walk five miles for a loaf of bread, then hope they can safely make it back home, to feed their children.

A white that becomes a cop in a black run city needs his or her head examined.

Sounds like The Purge may happen for real.

But it won't stop when the police return. Enough bad stuff will have happened that the resulting revenge will carry on for years. Just the race war that Obama seems to want.

I am one who believe we have at least twice as many cops as we need.

Mostly because we have FAR too many laws.

"Just the race war that Obama seems to want. "

Who do you think would win such a war?

Why would a black man want something like that?

Brings to mind that there are two kinds of depolicing.

The first is depolicing from dangerous criminal activity. Stop enforcing laws for things like armed robbery, rape, murder, etc.

The second is depolicing from revenue generating activity. Which is what all those extra laws you mention are designed to do. Stop enforcing laws that turn cops into defacto tax collectors and profit centers.

I’d bet the latter would make the politicians start screaming a lot louder and quicker than the first.
