I don't actually think Martin is all that great as a writer. He's creative and he came up with an interesting "universe". But George Lucas did the same. The "Star Wars" storyline is a pretty good storyline. But I think Lucas was a bad writer and a bad director. The Star Wars movies (mostly) were not that good. Martin describes an interesting world, but he screws things up because he's not all that good -- some of the flaws you point out might have been avoided by a better writer.
Sandor Clegane isn’t dead, ansel. The Hound is dead, but Sandor is not.
A lot of the men are beasts, and the language can be pretty rough. But strong women abound.
I agree, but for Tolkien I think he presented plenty of Christian themes in his series. GRRM is creepy and that’s reflected in his work.
Martin is a creepy guy. Some of the stuff (a lot of the stuff) tells me that he has some issues. There is nothing Christian about Game of Thrones. The utter lack of morality drives the story -- and that allows for some interesting and creative situations. But it also allows a lot of unnecessary and distasteful stuff.
I fear that it is thematic of our times. The Devil’s on the march and shows like this push the limits. Luckily, the Light shines brighter as darkness comes.
Then again, remember GoT is set in a medieval society without the light of Christianity. And, even with the light of Christianity, when the throne in question was important enough — the Imperial throne of the Roman Empire, its capital moved to Constantinople — there was an awful lot of treachery. And I think there are both Italian and Scottish precedents for “the Red Wedding”.
Quite right.
But my point is that this way of life is so totally unrelieved in GOT.
BTW, one example is found in the early days of Islam.
The Abassids had revolted against and overthrown the Ummayads. Many of that family were killed, while the rest fled into hiding.
The Abassids then declared an amnesty and held a great fest of reconciliation with the surviving Ummayads. 80 of them were betrayed and slaughtered.
“Have you read the entire series? I stopped. I want to be shocked.”
Go ahead and read the books. The producers have already admitted that this season differs from the story line of the books on a number of points (because Martin is SLOW, and story in the books is simply too sprawling for TV).
“Sorry, I realize Tolkien was unrealistic in the noble motives of the good characters, and that noble ideals have always been mixed with base motives.”
Unrealistic? Not exactly.
“the constant betrayal and dishonor that almost all the characters displayed went far beyond anything seen in the actual Middle Ages, IMO.”
That sort of behavior didn’t reach its height and perfection until libtards started gaining office in the U.S. Of A. ;)
In Tolkien's world there are good guys, outnumbered and fighting the good fight against the clearly-defined forces of evil. In game of thrones, everyone wallows in dishonor and depravity, then dies. Usually messily.
Like I said, not impressed.
For example the libtards who support the current administrations destruction of the USA obviously feel as though they will not be caught up in the bad things that result from the current policies in place and the ones to come as well.
A little perusal of history would show them that the blindly loyal followers are the first to die when the knives come out for real.
So in this the story of GOT seems to follow life. It is over the top of course and not really social commentary as much as intended to sell books to the mass market.
The HBO is soft porn/snuff porn all the way except when it is a little harder. It is not safe for work and not safe for kids period. Are there some decent performances, yes but the overall is a depiction of the majority of the world that the USA had risen above.
I think we lose track of how good the USA was and still is in some places. No wonder people all over the world struggle, sweat and pray to come here.
The current admin abetted by a willing MSM are doing yeoman's work to destroy us.
As usual the left has no idea what makes America great so they thrash about virtually aimlessly like a bull in a china shop causing disjointed destruction of beautiful things.
They are scum.
Caution book spoiler alert.
Although this probably won't be in the show. Or a wandering brother (septon in world) finds him and takes him to their monastery (quiet isle).
No, I read the first three books. I’ve been told repeatedly that the fourth and fifth books aren’t worth reading.
I didn’t like that either. I wondered why she didn’t kill him.
I can’t believe I got them all right.
I love Game of Thrones, I am with you, I want
the Hound to survive somehow.
