I wonder just how much the mormon influence in scouting resulted in the acceptance of gay scouts.

I’m just wondering what the extra alleging was that made it “over alleged”.

I wonder how much the alleged sexual abuse in the Mormon church compares to the other religions such as the Catholics and Baptists.........

The progressive solution to sexual abuse in the Boy Scouts is to remove barriers to having gay scoutmasters. What could be more logical than that?

That’s a very good question.

The BSA National President at the time, was a mormon...he traveled to SLC in the weeks prior to the announcement of the “vote”...

It’s curious that previous attempts by the BSA to modify the membership policy had failed when the mormons did not give their consent...I wonder what made this attempt so successful.

The mormons have a huge “hollow” Scouting program...they register and pay for every youth of Scouting age who is on their rosters, regardless of participation.

Unlike conventional units who only pay for Scouts who participate...

The BSA receives huge sums of $$ in registration fees from SLC, yet, doesn’t have to provide infrastructure or program for vast numbers of youth.

SLC has considerable financial influence in the BSA.

So, you were making an assertion that mormons possibly have less influence than Catholics or Baptists with the BSA...

So,...I gave you some information.

Very telling that while the Scouts refuse requests for interviews they got interviews from the former bishop and from high representative of the LDS church.

I agree that the Scouts are on the verge of caving, and the LDS church is basically the only thing holding their feet to the fire. With 28% of the Scout enrollment, Scouts would be sunk if the LDS made good their promise to pull out. The next highest group in Scouts, the United Methodist Church, is currently being ripped apart by the disagreement over same sex issues.

It doesn’t prove that they have more or less influence than any other church.

Sorry, I might have misunderstood you.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), a longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, teaches that homosexual activity is immoral.[50] The LDS Church is the largest single sponsor of Scouting units with over 30,000 units nationwide, which comprise about 13% of BSA’s youth members.[51][52] In 2000, an attorney representing the LDS Church stated that “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ... would withdraw from Scouting if it were compelled to accept openly homosexual Scout leaders”.[51][53] This does not differ from the LDS Church policy of allowing “non-practicing” self professed gay members to enjoy all the same rights and privileges as any other church member.

An LDS spokesman issued a statement “We caution others not to speculate about our position .... Neither has the [LDS] Church launched any campaign either to affect or prevent a policy change.”[54]

Ok...you stick with that.

My experience over the past couple of decades tells me different.

Hope you have a nice evening.

I cannot see Mormon parents allowing their boys to participate in the BSA if the Mormon church condoned something like that.

I think that if it happened on one camping weekend or outing, how could the church, or any sponsoring organization, be held responsible?

No, I didn’t read the article.

Actually, the percentages of registrations are much higher...approaching 40% now that many other units have been forced or have chosen to recharter with unaffiliated churches or organizations.

In this article, they state 38%...but it varies.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865578960/LDS-Church-welcomes-Scoutings-gay-membership-compromise.html?pg=all

[Just for edification, not every Scout unit is chartered with a church. It does make it convenient and is quite helpful in espousing and teaching a solid moral foundation, but not mandatory.]

What I can tell you is that in my experiences, the actual number of participants is a fraction of that, yet the LDS pay for ALL youth registered in the church as members, active or not. Unless a parent opts their child out, all boys 8-18 in the LDS church are registered automatically.

It’s the LDS church’s youth “program” for boys.

They don’t condone it per se...they just don’t have “a problem” with homosexual youth participating in Scouting as long as they don’t act on their impulses [there is no way to guarantee or ensure that].

This is the crux of the problem for many parents...Scouting should be “sexless”, yet, we’re introducing same sex attracted boys into a target rich environment.

How do Scout leaders ensure a hetero kid isn’t possibly placed in jeopardy by tenting them with a homosexual kid?

Then there’s the potential for homosexual kids to get harassed or bullied...don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of homosexuality, but at the same time, don’t want to see kids harassed or bullied either. They need good role models and guidance.

It’s a double-edged sword and the BSA is doing all it can to avoid being cut while swinging it at the units.

It’s a question we’re wrestling with, and the BSA will not offer any guidance on the matter. Not that we’ve had to confront it yet, but it’s always good to have a plan if and when the situation does arise.

In addition, words mean things...the policy states “...basis of sexual orientation or preference...” When one takes that out to its logical expansion...GBTQ.
