Bankrupt consumer electronics retailer RadioShack Corp. (RSHC), has listed personal data of millions of its customers for sale.
The RadioShack assets listed for sale includes more than 65 million customer names and physical addresses and 13 million email addresses. Hilco Streambank is the advisory firm that is taking care of disposition of RadioShack's assets in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy auction.
According to reports, the auction for the personal data of customers has been concluded with hedge fund Standard General winning the auction. However, the deal still requires approval from a bankruptcy court and it looks like RadioShack will also face legal hurdles in selling customer data.
New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has voiced his objection saying that the company has violated its privacy policy. "When a company collects private customer data on the condition that it will not be resold, it is the company's responsibility to uphold their end of the bargain," said Attorney General Schneiderman.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has also objected to the deal.

I just went to the Attorney General’s website to make sure I’m still on the `no call’ list. I report unsolicited calls from non-exempt companies.
They have my name, associated with the address of the house I grew up in.
That’s Wrigley Field!
Now I want an Orange Whip.

It was sort of like a game.
Thanks Citizen Zed.
They would always ask for my phone number and address, and I would always tell them "I prefer to be an International Man of Mystery".
Or just "no thank you".
Ditto!
Always gave 867-5309 as my phone number.
867-5309
This is how it works. Only this is transparent. There’s got to be a nice, efficient black market for all the other data that doesn’t go through bankruptcy court.
OMG! I hope they didn’t give up the number in my Free Battery of the Month card!!!!
Ask for Jenny.
Why does radio shack ask for your phone number when you’re just buying batteries? /seinfeld
Now we know why. To sell it for money. /sam
Jenny I got your number...
I want to make you mine...
