Our firstborn developed colic and would cry a lot, no matter what we did. Sometimes going for short drives in the minivan would help. I am glad that the cops weren’t called every time he would cry. But we knew our neighbors and they knew us, so there was no suspicion of anything wrong.

I think you are assuming he knew something was wrong. If I’m coming and going and hear a baby cry, I’m not going to automatically assume 911 needs to be called. We don’t know that the baby was crying continuously. It doesn’t say he could hear him while in his apartment. I don’t blame him, but I imagine there will be people that do as modern society always wants to find someone to lay blame on.

When`s the last time you saw a working payphone? I`ve heard that in all of North Eastern Ohio there are only two payphones and they are way south of Akron in Amish country, and only because they fought to keep them!

This country needs to bring back "callboxes". They don't have to be a booth you can step into but there should be working police/emergency phones along the streets.

When people are robbed at gunpoint, the cellphone is the first thing they are going to take and not just for the "valuable iphone". It keeps you defenseless and unable to call the cops.

Also, as you ring into the city from one, the operator can pinpoint your location. This is good if it isn't your city or maybe your regular part of town.

Well then apparently you don`t know how liberals think. George Zimmerman was Hispanic too, but not to them.

Let the baby cry. Swatting (the wrongful calling of 911) leads to death too. Don’t get knee-jerky on us FRiend.

Sen Menendez opposed Obama on Cuba, Israel, Iran. That cannot be overlooked.

True, but they eat their own at the drop of a hat.

I don’t blame him...

I certainly agree with you, 100%. A crying baby almost always means just that, a crying baby, and nothing more. It would have taken an extraordinarily perceptive person to notice that something was wrong.

I hope that the man is not too hard on himself. He is in no way at fault.

Typical behaviour in slums - nobody cares......
Had incident couple months back in neighboring city, house
caught fire, were using extension cords from first floor because power cut off to upstairs apartment

Person next door went out to buy cigarettes (at 3AM), noticed house on fire, walked to corner bodega, bought cigaretts, walked back past house, still on fire - did not bother to call fire department - 4 people died in upstairs

Tragic, but probably avoidable if anyone gave a damn. Where was the father of the child? Oh, who knows, don’t ask. If she was a junkie, you’d think other family members would’ve taken the child or visited every damn day to see if either one was still alive. Better yet, go to court, get custody of the baby, force the mother into rehab and they’d both be alive today. Madness reigns supreme.

Remember, drugs don’t hurt anyone except the user. Is that right Liberaltarians?

Remember, the Drug War doesn't hurt anyone except addicts and dealers. No innocents have ever been harmed, let alone killed, by drug enforcement, and all our liberties are completely intact. Isn't that right, Statistalibans?

The general zeitgeist on FR is to rage about nosey neighbors who do call the police.

But we knew our neighbors and they knew us, so there was no suspicion of anything wrong.

I imagine people often not knowing their neighbours comes into play. The article I linked above gives more info. It said the mom was despondent about her own my dying in November. It said she kept to herself. I have a brother here in CO that lives by himself. We see each other maybe two, three times a year tops. My mom contacts him a lot and keeps track of him. I don't blame her brother or the neighbour(s). I'm sure they will feel guilt, but it's just a tragedy.

And I don’t think it’s been determined how she died yet.

There are cries, and then there are desperate cries. Moms know what I'm talking about.. I would pound on her door and after a few attempts over a span of a couple hours I WOULD CALL THE POLICE WHO WOULD THEN PHONE HER HOME and after not getting an answer they would enter the house.

And YES, I would've done this.

Watch the Republican Primary. Rubio, Cruz, Paul, Carson, Walker, Jindal, Pence, Kasich, and other wannabes are all “Tea Party”. Cristie and Jeb are probably the only ones in the pack not “Tea Party”.

Watch how their supporters attack each other over real and imagined imperfections, including on FR.

Poor baby- slowly starving to death and screaming.Children born to junkies are doomed. If they survive childhood they are psychologically messed up, most likely inheriting the addictive personality, and will repeat the cycle. Exceptions are rare.
Too bad there can't be an additive to heroin, meth, marijuana et. al. that sterilizes users. That way the only lives they can destroy are their own-or those who choose to deal with them.

He could have called the police or even 911, even anonymously.....Can’t be done anonymously. Just two weeks ago I saw the house across the alley from me in subzero temps at 0600 hrs with the door swinging in the wind. I called 911, gave the address for the people across the alley and explained the mother is 90 something yrs. old, her son ( VN deserter) who is blind and told them something is wrong. They asked “Mr. XXX why don’t YOU go over to see if everything is OK?” I said it was because I used to mow her lawn every summer and she called the cops on me and said I was going to rape her. The cop came up to me while I was mowing and said he had a complaint and explained to me. I said “Right, assh*le. I’ve always had my lawnmower with me when I rape somebody.” No Social Services agency would take any interest in this woman or son until they found out they had a house temperature of 35 degrees since the day before. Now they have some kind of caretaker coming to see over them.
