freerepublic | 3/6/2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 03/06/2015 12:47:33 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Well, after a week of lots of snow, sleet, and snain, we are finally above freezing, and the sun is shining. Most of the snow has melted today.

Grand daughter has enjoyed the snow days, but this will probably be the last bunch of snow days(I hope). I have a couple of tomatoes ready to repot into a 4 inch pot, and looking forward to getting some outdoor clean up done on Saturday.

Hope everyone is doing well. Have a great week end. God Bless.

Pinging the list. A couple of links (I hope) from last week’s thread - thanks to Red Devil for the info.

Well here in west Michigan our snow will be melting next week, high 30’s to mid 40’s. WooHoo!! No gardening happening here yet but I went to a home & garden show in Grand Rapids yesterday and got a few flowering fern bulbs to try. I have lots of shade around the house. Spring is just around the corner.

Here between Cleveland and Akron, we have 12 to 14 inches of snow on the ground. Had some rain the other day, then dropped back into the teens. The top couple inches of “snow” are now glacier-like ice! Warming is coming, but I think it’s going to take quite a bit to melt this stuff!

That is so dangerous, when the ice forms on top of the snow. I am so glad that I don’t have to commute to work anymore, but worry about my daughter who does.

Being in NW Florida, the weather gets warm and gets cold again so that the fruit trees are tricked into believing the spring has come.

They flower, then the blooms freeze, so looks like no fruit again this year on my plum trees. My tangerine tree doesn’t bloom for a month or so, so hopefully it will be okay....................

Wife and I visited Orlando for a few days in February. I bought a swim suit and hit the hotel pool while she went to meetings. A nice fellow sun bather shared some 40 SPF so I didn’t burn. It was 82-84 degrees.
Then we had to come home.

We have the same problem here with peach trees. In the 70s we lived in a place that had a nice size peach tree. We only got peaches once in the 8 years we lived there.

We will have a killing frost or two in March and April just about the time that we have nice blooms on the trees.

I remember Orlando before Disney came to town.

It was an agricultural center and was surrounded by citrus trees for miles and miles.......................

The low last night here in Massachusetts was 0, and the high today was 24 degrees. I still haven’t started any seeds. We have 3 feet of snow on the ground, and on Wednesday morning at 4AM had water pooling on our living room floor. Mr. trisham had to go out on a ladder and hack away at an ice dam that had formed under our skylights, and causing water to flow down our sliding glass doors into the house. What a mess!

The trees here will blossom, but if the temp stays below 60°F the bees don’t come out to pollinate.................

greenseyes, if you don't want this post on the gardening thread, yank it, it's okay if you do). :o) We did go to a Catholic book store today and bought cross pins to wear every day.

I'm putting below the post I wrote about identifying myself as a Christian. Our way of life, including using our land as we want to grow what we want, is threatened. We have to remain free to be the “boss” of our home and land.

I am greatly troubled over the massacre of Christians and the movement to remove anything Christian from our lives right here in the USA. Now, it has gone so far, even in the USA, one would think twice before identifying him/herself as a Christian. Poppycock, I'll make sure everyone knows I am a Christian. Here is what I wrote, and greeneyes has agreed to join me to identify always as a Christian.

“Okay, I’m going to start identifying myself as a Christian. I have a heavy duty gold chain with a cross on it and I’m going to wear it every day.

There is a Catholic book store not far from us and we will go there to find a Christian pin (like a lapel pin) and each of us will get one and wear it on our clothes every day.

Perhaps some of you are sick of this Obama Muslim crap also and willing to identify yourself as a Christian. Find a Christian Book Store, Catholic or otherwise, and get a pin, could be a cross or whatever they have that designates the wearer as a Christian.

Do I have any takers?”

Warm sunshine!

My goal for the weekend is to get the potting shed painted, move the cold frame out of my workshop, and fill it up with dirt/potting mix/horse poo.

We were at a convention with a half dozen hotels nearby. It seemed like there was one fancy restaurant after another.
Fun !
