At the 2010 Academy Awards, Mo'Nique wore white gardenias in her hair just as Hattie McDaniel had in 1940 when she became the first African-American actress to win an Oscar. The Precious star later thanked McDaniel in her best supporting actress acceptance speech "for enduring all that she had to, so that I would not have to." As The Hollywood Reporter recognizes the 75th anniversary of McDaniel's historic win, we speak at length with Mo'Nique about her debt to her movie-star idol, her memories of her own Oscar night and the dramatic turn her career has taken in the five years since. As director Lee Daniels put it to her in a recent phone call, "Mo'Nique, you've been blackballed." How do you respond to those who criticize Hattie McDaniel for only taking maid roles?
If they knew who this woman really was, they would say, "Let me shut my mouth." If they really understood the fights behind the scenes, the conversations we'll never have the opportunity to hear. And then you say to those people, "Well, tell me what other roles were available." Because what she was was an actress and at that time, she wasn't getting the roles that her white counterparts were getting. She was saying, "I'm an actress. When you say 'cut,' I'm not [a maid anymore]." So I say to those people: know that woman in full before you judge.

Pray tell, what are these "roles" that these women want that they are "shut out" of? Action star? English spy? Sexy mistress? War hero? Race car driver? Astronaut?
She’s talking about Hattie McDaniel in the 1930s and ‘40s, not about herself.
she has not been black balled... it happens to many an Oscar winner... once they win, they disappear from the big screen... Adrian Brody, Mira Sorvino, Helen Hunt, Timothy Hutton, Marsha Mason, Cuba Gooding Jr... it is called the Oscar Curse... seems that statue would open doors to many quality roles, but it doesn’t... not always...
That’s the problem when the Oscars are forced to give Oscars out by Affirmative Action. Sorry but that was the truth. She never should have won it for that movie Precious. Yes I saw it and didn’t think she was worthy of the Oscar but they figured they better and now look....no movies for her.

Well, let’s see. Were Halle Berry, Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Octavia Spencer, or Lupita Nyong’o blackballed after their Oscar wins? No? Then it must just be you, Mo’Nique.
What did she win for? And the other gal in that picture is the one with the unpronounceable name, right? She’s on the TV Show Empire now. And you know, I think she’s even fatter!
But I guess she’s a good actress, so I heard when this movie came out, although they aren’t giving her too much to do on Empire so far.
That’s a great show, Freepers should watch it. It’s a total over the top soap opera, but I love it because it is SO politically incorrect.
And they do the music really well, it is pretty much rap, but they are very smart and do it in a way that even non-rap fans such as myself can enjoy it.
Da rev al to have another emergency meeting in 3,2,1.....
I’m pretty addicted to the show. Much better than I thought at first.

Read further. She’s talking about herself.
She wanted that 50 shades of Grey role.
How has the Oscar changed your life? Has it?
I get asked that question a lot: How did the Oscar change my life? What it did was that it gave me a new reality. And it let me know that an award wasn't going to change my life that I had to be in control of changing my life. . . .
Doesn't sound like a bad answer.
Thats the problem when the Oscars are forced to give Oscars out by Affirmative Action.
She appears to not be qualified for a lot of roles. If there are no movies with characters in your “niche”, you won’t get any movies. Her’s is beyond narrow.
She said she was denied roles (apparently) because she’s personally disliked, not that there are no roles other than maids available to black women.

You were wrong. Read the entire article. Done. Have a nice day.
She could play Oprah when the biopic, um, rolls around.
The problem for the studios is that they look bad if they pay an Oscar-winning black woman less than a non-Oscar-winning white woman. The solution is to avoid the problem by not selecting her.
