Apple Commercial: You Better Burn That Flag...
Apple TV Commercial | Current | Orwell's: Who Needs You.

Posted on 01/11/2015 4:14:14 PM PST by ziravan

Lyrics to song on current Apple Commercial:

"Who Needs You" by The Orwells.

You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let 'em have some fun You better count your blessings Kiss mom and pa You better burn that flag Cause it ain't against the law!

You better pledge your allegiance You're not the only one Listen up forefathers I'm not your son You better save the country You better pass the flask You better join the army I said: "no thank you, dear old uncle Sam!"

You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let them have some fun, some fun, some fun!

They edited out the reference to both burning the flag and the dis of the military in the commercial. But this is the song they’re promoting.

I’m sure the ad wouldn’t have been approved with those words in it. Shoot, the execs that approved the ad probably didn’t know the rest of the words.

But the ad writers surely knew what they were doing. Including this particular song is certainly designed to send the message of the song:

We’re cooler than thou rebels.

By using this song, Apple is incorporating the tone and meaning of the song in their ad. They can’t have it both ways:

Look how cool we are but we really didn’t mean that it was OK to burn the flag just because we alluded to our hipness with a song that advocates just that...

I’m heterosexual, so I don’t know anything about Apple products, but here are the lyrics and the song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROZhrRm88ms

You better toss your bullets
You better hide your guns
You better help the children
Let ‘em have some fun
You better count your blessings
Kiss mom and pa
You better burn that flag
Cause it ain’t against the law!

You better pledge your allegiance
You’re not the only one
Listen up forefathers
I’m not your son
You better save the country
You better pass the flask
You better join the army
I said: “no thank you, dear old uncle Sam!”

You better toss your bullets
You better hide your guns
You better help the children
Let them have some fun, some fun, some fun!

Apple did edit out the most controversial lyrics in their commercial, picking up at the lyric about pledging allegiance and then skipping directly over the verse that rejects Uncle Sam.

I’m pulling up my chair and getting out the popcorn to see how he and the iCrew run cover for Apple on this one.

Expect more diversion and flat out lying. Same as it ever was with the fanatically devoted.

Remember the one where in the face of direct evidence they Ignored reality and carried on? Oh wait. Thats every Apple glorifying thread.

On the 60s station earlier today, I hear "The Rain, The Park, & Other Things" by The Cowsills. What a perfect slice of psychedelic bubble gum from the Summer of Love!

Now I have that going through my head and for some reason, it brings images of Apple products to my mind. This would have been appropriate music to set to an Apple commercial.

Gack! You call that drek noise a “song”? Can’t understand a single word the “singer” said. Are you SURE there are “lyrics” in there somewhere?

“...Very poor choice in music for an ad.”
******************************************************************************************************
Well, I listed to the less than 30 second commercial and the only lyrics I picked up was ‘You better help the children Let ‘em have some fun”. I suspect they picked a CHUNK of this song for the very LIVELY music it contained.

So, IMHO it’s not a commercial trying to make a political statement—it’s a commercial pitching the Apple product to a young crowd. And, judging by soaring Apple sales, it’s having success at that target (actually, the product itself is what’s selling itself).

Thats why I say they should promote NIN’s Big man with a gun to Rape/violence groups. No one will pay any attention to the parts they cut when they run to I tunes and youtube!

I am a big man
(yes I am)
And I have a big gun
Got me a big old **** and I
I like to have fun
Held against your forehead
I’ll make you **** it
Maybe I’ll put a hole in your head
You know just for the **** of it
I can reduce you if I want
I can devour
I’m hard as ******* steel and I’ve got the power
I’m every inch a man and I’ll show you somehow
Me and my ******* gun
Nothing can stop me now
Shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot
I’m going to **** *** over you
Me and my ******* gun
Me and my ******* gun
___

I mean who does that?

“Beware the divine wrath of Swordmaker.”

“Behold, I have created the blacksmith
Who blows the coals in the fire,
Who brings forth an instrument for his work;
And I have created the spoiler to destroy.
No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn.”
Isaiah 54: 16-17

Wow, I loved the Cowsills and I loved that song. The Cowsills harmonized their voices perfectly and gave us something magical. At least I considered it to be a beautiful song capturing a moment in time. And I wasn't a participant in the "Summer of Love"; I spent that summer in the Army across the ocean. But we did have Armed Forces radio.
