Ministry of Defence forced to ask US for help in search for Russian submarine thought to be lurking

The Ministry of Defence has been forced to ask the US for help as it hunts for a suspected Russian submarine believed to be lurking off the coast of Scotland. Two U.S Navy aircraft were this week drafted in to carry out patrols in the North Atlantic in a bid to bridge the 'gaping chasm' in Britain's anti-submarine capability. It comes after the RAF's £4bn fleet of 'spy-in-the-sky' Nimrod surveillance aircraft was controversially scrapped in 2010, amid warning it would weaken Britain's defences.

This is the 2nd time the UK has asked for ASW assistance. Looks like the lyrics to Rule Britannia need to be changed.

U.K. should buy some of the retiring USN P-3s.

If a Russian is lurking how can we tell?

What is his tagline?

Ask him to say “Moose and Squirrel”

"NATO is there for a reason and calling in allies to help out if the reason."

Yes, and also the NATO charter calls for it's members to spend 2% of their GDP on defense. I'm not sure if Britian is living up to the 2% requirement but I know that very few of the NATO members (with the notable exception of the U.S.) are doing that. NATO members need to quit spending their budgets on social programs and start living up to their military committments. Healthcare for all doesn't sound so great when dictator Putin is the one providing it.

So by that logic, they can use us as a mercenary force whenever they want? They have no planes for their carrier so are asking for USMC squadrons. And now this, twice.

Shirkers. It isn’t up to NATO (USA) to do things just because they wont. And why us? Howzabout some Germans? Some Italians? Some Spaniards? Their beloved Turks?

Exactly. The concept of OPSEC is foreign to this admin, and I’m sure this was purposefully leaked by our side. We used to conduct joint ops all the time with the UK, but ever since the cretin got into office, he never misses a chance to humiliate the “colonial imperialist” brits. Tom Clancy would have this prez rubbed out by Jack Ryan in a novel, and his Islam loyalties revealed.

They're flown out and at the end of their useful life. Far better to invest in new platforms, and there's some buzz that the Brits are looking at the U.S. P-8 and the Japanese P-1.

One catch. NATO membership requires that members spend a % of their GDP on defense. The UK is not following that rule and way under spending on defense.

“...’spy-in-the-sky’ Nimrod surveillance aircraft...”

The article may be confusing its Nimrods. The Nimrod MR1/MR2 were maritime patrol aircraft active with the RAF. They would have been useful in this ASW scenario, searching for a Russian sub.

“spy-in-the-sky” implies an AEW aircraft, like the U.S. E-3. An AEW version of the Nimrod (Nimrod AEW3) was in development for about a decade, but was cancelled before entering service.

You know, I don’t agree with the extent of our defence cuts, but I think the US owes us some credit by us going to war in Afghanistan following the 9-11 attacks, as well as the Iraq war, which we had no obligation to get involved in at all and has cost us dearly in terms of blood and treasure.

You think Britain participated just because it was a favor to Americans and served no larger purpose? That it is merely some kind of act of revenge for 9/11?
