The article may be confusing its Nimrods. The Nimrod MR1/MR2 were maritime patrol aircraft active with the RAF. They would have been useful in this ASW scenario, searching for a Russian sub.
“spy-in-the-sky” implies an AEW aircraft, like the U.S. E-3. An AEW version of the Nimrod (Nimrod AEW3) was in development for about a decade, but was cancelled before entering service.
Don’t forget the current POTUS version of nimrod.....

Yes. There was also an ELINT Nimrod R1, ASW gear removed, cabin fiiled with computers, and antenna filling the long bomb bay. which served from 1974 to 2011.
