Did you visit HuffPo last week? You might have a virus

This past week, The Huffington Post and several major websites displayed malware-laced advertisements that infected computers and locked them down.

The cyberattack and extortion campaign was discovered by researchers at cybersecurity firm Cyphort. The hackers are demanding money to unlock computers infected with their malware.

It's unclear how many computers were infected. The attack appears to have only affected people running Windows PCs using outdated browsers, including Internet Explorer 8 -- the most-used version of Microsoft's IE browser. Modern, updated browsers such as Internet Explorer 11, Google Chrome and Mozilla's latest version of Firefox were not susceptible to the malware.

Ransomware. Nothing new. A number of variants were in circulation last year.

It’s not (necessarily) about Firefox, or Chrome for that matter. Typically exploited is Java that runs in your browser.

I’ll bet there are Obama voters who fall for that every time.

Who would want to attack a liberal website? Sounds like an inside job? Much like moslems look for someone to blame. If Conservatives can be blamed it will certainly happen.

If I suspected it, I’d just laugh and revert to a snapshot.

Over and done within two minutes. The digital thugs just take advantage of the ignorance of most people. With the available options now, there’s no excuse for something like this harming anyone. I would ONLY go online from a VM these days. Back up any valuable data to a network location.

I watched some Ransomware videos on youtube last week and a few used Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to boot from and clean up their computer

Someone here posted a link to Huffpo the other day and I went there to check out more about the author, as the article had some merit. Yikes. I was on Chrome so hope nothing happened.

I never visit Huffin’Blow or DU... If I wanted a “insider’s view”, I would sooner be the jizmopper at one of the XXX theaters on 42nd Street (that will be back faster than you can say “Warren Wilhelm Jr.”).

(Just to be kind, I sent the article to several lieberals who love to quote from Huffpot.. Of course, I recommended that they ignore the info since I found it here, and you know how rabid FReepers are. ;-)

Every virus, malware, ransomware can be removed.

With the exception of being encrypted remotely.

That cannot be undone, by a home user.
