United Airlines booted 13 flight attendants who refused to fly from San Francisco International Airport to Hong Kong in summer last year upon discovering a "disturbing" drawing at the tail of the airplane.
The airline filed a complaint with the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration but the investigation determined that the threat had no credibility.
This happened on July 14 of last year as the United Flight 869 was already preparing for the 1:55 P.M. departure but an image six inches in length was discovered at the tail of the plane.
The file described the drawing as having two faces with "one smiling and the other with a more troubling expression that could be described as frowning or devilish." Above the faces were the words "BYE BYE."
The image was said to be found near the access panel to the gas turbine engine and it around 30 feet off the ground. The area is accessible only by authorized personnel via a specialized equipment.
According to the complaint, the images might have been written at the Boeing 747-400 while on the ground at San Francisco or when it arrived in the area at eleven in the morning from the Incheon Airport in South Korea.

It’s not so scary, but I would reconsider taking that flight. Don’t blame the flight staff one bit.
Mechanics goofing off.
Well, something bad did happen. They were fired.
I suspect we'll be hearing more from them.
Yeah, that’s what I thought. Surprised it didn’t say “Wash me!”, too.
any aircraft mechanics have a going away party for a retiring co-worker?
CC
Is this like the dirty trucks I see on the freeway where someone has written “Wash Me” in the dirt on the back of the truck?
As a passenger, I want the crew to be alert to potential Arab/ islamoNazi terrorism. I’d now choose to fly on other airlines
In before the Helen Thomas pic
About 20 years ago, I was on a plane leaving SLC, UT that was delaying taking off, sitting at the end of the runway. It finally went back to the terminal, but at the very end of the run of gates away from everywhere - no other planes.
They made us all deplane on a stair car and go into the gate area right next to the plane where they started to unload all the bags and make every passenger identify his/her bag. They wouldn’t let anyone leave and there were dogs, police, etc.
There had been a bomb threat called in - they said they thought it was a prank, and after an hour searching the plane, they said “we THINK there’s no bomb so we are going to leave”. I made the airline put me on the flight the next day and they paid for my hotel. The plane took off and landed as schedule. I still don’t regret doing what I did.
Hmm, I just can’t interpret that in a threatening manner. It says “Bye bye” on a vehicle that is made to travel long distances. Clearly, the message here is similar to the “Wash me!” message that one sometimes sees on dirty cars or trucks, but with a bit more flair.
