Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface Pro 3 tablet-notebook convertible computer is selling surprisingly well this holiday season, Pacific Crest Securities reported.
Pacific Crest analyst Brendan Barnicle called the Surface Pro 3 "Santa's surprise," saying the device could help Microsoft post revenue upside for the December quarter. Surface Pro 3 sales provided a similar boost to Microsoft's revenue in the September quarter, he said.
Barnicle raised his estimates for Microsoft's December quarter, its fiscal Q2. He reiterated his outperform rating on the stock with a price target of 58. Microsoft was up 1.5%, near 48.50, in afternoon trading in the stock market today.
"Over the past week we spoke with more than 50 major retailers across the United States. They reported surprisingly strong sales of Surface Pro 3," Barnicle said in a research note late Monday. "It is increasingly viewed as a laptop replacement for business users and students. Inventory levels are lean, with most retailers averaging six to eight days of sales on hand. Channel partners expect that Surface Pro 3 strength can continue into the new year as enterprise clients are showing more interest in the product."

I am getting two. One for me and one for my kid.
See that stylus pen in the photo you posted?
Never in my life would I have thought to use a stylus pen until I saw one in action at a Microsoft Kiosk. These pens are a technological marvel. I can’t say enough good about them other than just get out there and try one.
When you go to a kiosk or display table, be prepared to wait in line a long time as people can’t seem to try it and move on, especially kids and that stylus.
And the rest of the surface pro 3 is also amazing.
This product will have Microsoft coming back for market share with a vengeance.
And Windows 10 looks very very good and the whole approach to getting out to the user community is a major change from how Windows 8 and 8.1 were launched. This time around the user community is going to have it their way.
It is actually a very unique computing device. Likely the most unique since the original iMacs in the late 90s.
I’m glad MS stuck with it, despite tech bloggers doing there best to trash it. My sister owns a first gen, and loves it for her work. A bit too pricy for me right now though.
I sure hope your sister can upgrade to a Windows 10 version next year without having to buy a new Surface Pro.
Love my pro 3 and I just bought one for the wife for Christmas.
I think those SHOULD be able to. Her’s isnt an RT tablet, so it should be ok. But she isnt a tech geek, so she may not care in the end.
But a Surface Pro tablet can be pricey...akin to a PC. Fortunately, there are many low-price, low power versions out there from Asus, Lenovo, HP and Dell....some under $200.
With the harmonization of Windows 10 onto phones, expect Microsoft to start adding market share in that area as well.
Everyone knew MS was unifying across all hardware. Write an app for one and it runs on all devices.
MS is way out ahead of Apple & Google on this.
Apple has no path to harmonizing iOS with OSX. Google is totally fragmented and incapable of bridging Chrome with Android.
Will MS triumph again, like it did in the PC wars?
Public acceptance/adoption will determine their fate.
Show's how little you know. iOS and OS X share many of the same apps and are able to keep perfectly in sync via iCloud, Continuity and Handoff. iTunes, iPhoto, Pages, Number, Keynote and any number of other apps exist in both spaces with complete interoperability and file compatibility.
A computer is just a tool.
It is what you do with a tool that matters, not the tool.
The most productive computer programs I developed did not care which computer was used. The expertise learned in the subject matter such as how to nest parts to minimize waste is something no computer knows how to do. Windows 1000 will not know! Os Surface pro 1500 will not know. Or the program I developed to design a 2 stage drive using a 1500 HP motor, Surface Pro 50,000 will have no clue how to do.
I use much better paint brushes than what Michelangelo used. But I can not paint anything like him. My tools are better, but my painting skills are not.
iPads can cost as much as a PC. Really if the quality and usefulness is there people will buy it.
Yeah, but it can’t sync wirelessly with my Zune......
Not exactly true. While not sharing apps, Handoff allows you to start documents on an iPad or iPhone and complete them on a Mac and vice verse.
It is too bad MS can’t harmonize across its own OS generations. MS dumped support of Windows XP because nobody wanted Vista. Getting programs written for XP to run on 7 doesn’t happen so you are stuck in a world of virtual XP.
They are not so pricey anymore. They just took $100 of the price so that the i3 core (which is good enough for most things) starts at $699. You can find deals beyond that as well.
I would love to get my hands on one to put it through the wringer with my engineering and CNC software. Anyone ever used some CAD software on a Surface?
We have some reviews from folks who have used AUTOCAD on a Surface Pro.
