This custom goes way back. In one of Kipling's WWI stories, there's a debate amongst the officers and NCOs of a unit as to whether noncombatants are authorized to "chalk" messages on the artillery.
Probably the ancient Romans wrote pithy phrases on the rocks they put in the catapults.
"Happy Hanukkah Hitler" gets style points though :-D
