Air rage and emergency exits: Two stormy weeks in Chinese aviation

By Maggie Hiufu Wong, CNN

December 19, 2014 -- Updated 0956 GMT (1756 HKT)

(CNN) -- Deja vu?

Yesterday's news?

Nope, it's just another series of air dramas involving disruptive Chinese air travelers.

It hasn't been the most peaceful fortnight in the aviation industry -- we've seen the aftermath of a Korean Air exec's "nut rage" and R&B singer Jeremih arrested for attempting to force open a closed airplane door after missing the last call for boarding.

In the midst of this unruly behavior have come no fewer than four inflight dramas involving Chinese tourists.

On the heels of a "Gimme my cup noodle water!" meltdown and two emergency exit incidents, a bizarre fight between multiple passengers broke out over a dispute involving a crying baby.

The poor kid probably just couldn't get any sleep with all the fuss going on.

Hot water throw down

The fortnight of infamy was highlighted by the cup noodle row heard 'round the world -- or at least across Asia.

On December 11, four tourists threw a series of tantrums on an Air Asia flight from Bangkok to Nanjing.

The episode began during takeoff when, observing safety rules, cabin staff refused to serve hot water to a couple who wanted to immediately get going on their cup noodle.

The couple retaliated by crushing nuts on the floor

This CNN website takes forever to open.

Oh well, guess they don’t want me to read the rest of the excerpt.

Maybe the Chinese don't fit into their seats anymore.
When WE went there EONS ago, we noticed that the seats on China Airlines were NOT built for the, er, American-European butts. Tight squeeze.
Maybe now the Chinese butts have outgrown those SKINNY seats.

Maybe someone found a cockroach in her/his soup. Hey, extra protein!

Just a thought.

I was stuck on the ground for almost an hour in an overstuffed airplane with a crying 2 year old. It drove me absolutely nuts and I wanted to strangle that kid.

Oh, the kid was mine...

I have traveled in China several times. They are the worst at PRC airports. I am surprised this behavior hasn’t been reported more frequently.

A caption, or some clue about what that photo represents would have been nice.

I left my OUIJA Board in my other suit...

A little more info on the Korean Air executive that ordered a plane back to the JFK terminal and to remove a flight attendant:

(CNN) — A Korean Air executive has resigned from some of her duties after she ordered a flight to be turned around to the gate and a flight attendant off the plane because she was served nuts in a bag instead of on a plate.

Heather Cho, whose Korean name is Cho Hyun-ah, resigned Tuesday from the airline's catering and in-flight sales business, and its cabin service and hotel business divisions, an airline spokesman said.

But she is keeping her title as a vice president of the national carrier, he said.

As for the next steps, the spokesman told CNN there is an investigation going on, so “we will have to see.”

The incident occurred Friday at New York's JFK airport on a flight due to take off for South Korea's Incheon International Airport, outside Seoul.

Cho reportedly demanded that the plane go back to the gate so the crew member who served her macadamia nuts out of a bag rather than on a plate in First Class could be kicked off the flight.

Although her role put her in charge of in-flight service, she was only a passenger on this flight and was not flying in an official capacity.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, Cho is the eldest daughter of Korean Air's chairman, Cho Yang-ho.
He apologized Tuesday for any inconvenience caused to passengers and said the incident would be investigated, the news agency reported.

Korean Air also issued an apology on Heather Cho’s behalf, Yonhap reported, in which she asked for forgiveness. “I will take full responsibility for the incident and step down from my post,” she is quoted as saying.

Korean Air apologized for any discomfort to those on the flight and said there had been no safety issues involved. The plane arrived at its destination only 11 minutes behind schedule, according to Yonhap.

“Even though it was not an emergency situation, backing up the plane to order an employee to deplane was an excessive act,” the airline said in a statement.

Here is the caption to the photo:

重慶飛香港航班乘客在機上大打出手

I found two interpretations to the caption, but I suspect we will need to wait for a Mandarin speaker to help us understand the context. Tiger, any help?
