There are widely reported and many firm rumors of 8.1 being upgraded free, but I’m still not 100% convinced yet.

Does anyone else know?

For what it’s worth, I started with 8 upgraded to 8.1 and went back to 8 because I couldn’t get Bluetooth devices to sync.

I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview in a dual boot configuration with my Windows 7. I was impressed but I wouldn’t upgrade unless I bought a new PC with it. Windows 7 works fine for me at home and work.

Does 10 require more resources than 7? If so they will be sorely disappointed at the sales....

Why no 9?... they found that older software that would look to see what version it was on could think it was win 95 or 98.. they the just bumped the name to window 10.

I’ve ran a VM of it an like it a lot.. it’s what windows 8 could on been...

microsoft just seem to get it OS’ s right every..
other.. time...

Win 8 joins, 95, Millennium and Vista in the dog pile

Win 10 looks like the new 98, XP, Win 7

I’ve had all of them (except 10) and that is why I still use XP and 7.

If you have some problems with some old 16 bit app..you can down load VirtualBox, it's free, or other “VM” software on your newer pc.. then install the older OS in VirtualBox that will run your older apps

Yep it takes a bit of geek skill but it's really kind of simple once you know what your doing...

A VM is a software “virtual computer” that runs in side your real computer like any other app.. you can the install any OS you want on this new software computer..it like having two different pc in one box at the same time

No 9.

That’s because seven (7) ate (8) nine (9)

Supposedly because programs check for version 95 and 98 by just using the 9

The headline makes it sound like 600 million existing PC’s are pining for Windows 8.2

I have been using 8.1 on five boxes for over a year and am very pleased with it. MS will not be abandoning 8.1. They were even supporting XP until a few months ago. There will probably be a favorable upgrade price for those who want 10.

I`ve been running that windows 10 preview for a

while too.Seems pretty nice so far,no problems.

Can`t figure how to shrink that partition size

to dual boot either Arch or Gentoo.

Doesn`t seem to have diskmngt.msc util like 7.

Microsoft will be at least 1 year behind but will be playing catch up with Apple and Google.

From what I've noticed, it's Google and Apple that are years behind Microsoft in OSes. In fact, it's going to be years before Apple catches up with what Windows 8/8.1 can do, and Google isn't even in the game.

Apple is still trying to improve on it's OSX UI, and that is about 20 years behind the times.

I've had no problems with Windows 8/8.1, and those that complain about the OS, have either never used it, or didn't know how to get it to work. Besides, inside Windows 8/8.1, resides Windows 7. But, Windows 8/8.1 is a lot more efficient, and actually, more intuitive.

So, instead of just bashing Windows 8/8.1 in general terms, why not tell us, with details, what it is that you dislike about the OS?

Actually, you're wrong.

600 million is correct, and the number could actually be much higher.

The 600 million would not be "new" PC sales. That number represents the number of existing devices that could be upgraded to the new OS. The installed base of Windows devices, is likely more than 1 1/2 billion, so, the number that could be upgraded is likely way more than 600 million.
