In light of the Mike Brown and Trayvon Martin cases, I am seeking FReeper opinions on how concealed, or open, carriers view their roles and responsibilities. Your responses are greatly appreciated.
What is this going to be used for? Sounds too much like a DOJ survey.
Too much grey area in your questions about “stepping in” so I will skip those questions.
I carry daily, concealed. My state allows for open carry already and I choose not to for the sake of “element of surprise” and a secondary that I don’t have eyes in the back of my head (for those eyeballing my piece). I am former military and trained well.
I think as a carrying citizen it’s not up to me to play cop. If a couple guys are trading knuckles, I’ll call it in and let the LEO’s sort it out and go about my business.
I carry so I can increase my chances of getting home every night and so I can protect those around me (i.e., my friends and loved ones). I do not carry to protect society as a whole. Those people need to get with the program and get themselves a gun and concealed carry.
Simple answer of three words: me and mine.

I am just interested in the views of other FReepers. I have my own long formed views and plans to be implemented if ever in any related situations.

Oh, and my questions also apply to anyone who may previously lost their guns in a boating accident.

Concealed means just that. I don’t tell anyone about it.
I have a Georgia Weapons Carry Permit and that is about all I’ll say about it. Even for weapons I may or may not have in my truck, my state does not require me to ‘alert’ an officer I have a weapon in the car. It may come up in questioning if the officer is reasonable, but it is not a requirement to self-identify.
The fact is that I know the laws better than you do and I do not have time to argue with you or educate your ignorant ass. Take your games back under your rock, Your busted.

I’ll state my sentiments exactly as did Ghost. Too much nebulous information being sought that should only required a normal amount of common sense to figure out without having to do a survey. Which brings me back to my opening question.
Since I am female, I carry concealed (which is all that is allowed in my state at the moment-—the new administration has vowed to go open carry.)
As to use, me and mine...
I have one close friend who recently had to use. An unleashed dog attacked a neighbor lady and her dog as they stood across the street chatting with him.
Once the weapon is fired, you must call the police, which my friend did. The police were polite and appreciative of my friend’s “service”. They shared how their experiences with CHL holders has been nothing but positive, and they support it completely.
The neighbors were not surprised (most of them carry as well) and very positive. Even the owner of the dog was okay after he saw the injuries his animal inflicted.
One more thing, I believe if you have your CHL, and do not always carry, you are doing a disservice to your family who could need you at any time.

I have bad hips. If you carry 1, carry another on the other side, to balance it.
That is not true. Of the 62 counties in NY, all but about 15 are "shall issue" with respect to concealed carry permits.

This is a big mistake. A responisble gun owner should always have a plan for the various defense situations that might become a reality. I constantly play out "what if" scenerios in my mind, just in case.

Agreed.
Gentle suggestions...
1. You should answer your own questions first.
2. You should explain why you are asking folks to reveal this info in an open, public forum.
3. By that point, if you still haven’t figured out why the entire exercise is not a good idea, you should brace yourself for some harsh replies.
