A six-year-old boy died yesterday after he was allegedly beaten up by his class teacher at a private school in India for not speaking in English. KMA. In this part of the world, speaking Spanish is almost a requirement.

My problem has been a racist grandparent that doesn't want my grandkids speaking anything but English and Kmher. Def no Spanish.

We'll speak all the damn languages we can master, including English and Spanish.

The grandkids learned the Greek alphabet this summer.

“Nobody deserves this.”

No, no they don’t. My heart grieves for this boy, and his family who will never get over it.

God has him now.

You know, I’m all in favor of a common language too, but I’ve actually never wanted to kill a child over it.

In fact it is, all the IT people here from India have to speak English here because there are literally thousands of different languages there, it’s the only way they can communicate with each other.

“t happens/happened a lot. My dad was beaten for being left handed. They beat it out of him.”

That used to happen a lot. The intent was probably good but it really screwed up kids.

Let me guess... He was Catholic.

Nyet. Left handed, one eyed, red-headed, stuttering son of a Baptist preacherman.

He did well in Golden Gloves, 1949. ;)

But nobody killed him, like this kid in India.

The kid and his family have my prayers.

“It happens/happened a lot. My dad was beaten for being left handed. They beat it out of him.”

They tried to make me write with my right hand when I was in grade school in 1959. It was like you were a freak or something.

I actually googled this and holy cow (ha, ha that’s a coincidence) do they have a lot of languages. But English IS an official language of the Government.

Here is a bit from the wikipedia entry “languages of India”

“The Republic of India does not have a national language.[4][5] The official languages of the Union Government of Republic of India are Hindi in the Devanagari script and English,[6][7] a position supported by a High Court ruling.[4] The languages of the Eighth Schedule, which have been referred to as the national languages of India since Nehru initiated such a practice. The 1991 census recognized “1576 rationalized mother tongues” which were further grouped into language categories. The 1961 census recognized 1,652,[8] and the 2011 census recognized 1,635.[9] (SIL Ethnologue lists 415). According to Census of India of 2001, 30 languages are spoken by more than a million native speakers, 122 by more than 10,000. More than three millennia of language contact has led to significant mutual influence among the four language families in India and South Asia. Two contact languages have played an important role in the history of India: Persian and English.[10]”

“Let me guess... He was Catholic.”

And you guessed wrong. It was quite common - among people of every religion - to force left-handed children to learn how to write with the right hand. All religions.
