My first cat was like that with birds outside. She would sit on the window motionless, eyes glued to the birds. I could do anything to try to get her attention to no avail. When birdwatching, she was in an hypnotic trance.

If all housecats weighed 50+ pounds the human race would have been eaten into extinction a long time ago. They are fully aware of that, and all their interactions with humans are governed by that knowledge.

When your cat stares at the wall above your pillow, he/she is probably simply imagining how high the blood spatter marks would reach after she severed your jugular.
