Categorize this as yet another question I have about personal computers, but am too embarrassed to ask anybody about till now. That is what I wonder. I hear the web described as a 'cloud', so I suppose it one way it exists is in the form of a massive activity ball of entertwined signals. Sometimes, I'm lucky, and my connection occurs almost immediately. Does it variate in intensity and speed as would radio waves, with consistant peaks and valleys?. I've begun to wonder if the net is being sent out in the form of linear beams, almost laser like in their straightness and concentration. Other times, my connection is sporadic, or more prone to fluctuation. It almost oozes into my cell phone. I know this sounds hopelessly unlearned, but it is a question I have. Knowing the various ways the net is sent out or received may help me to know the best way to position my phone or tablet or laptop in order to recieve these data more quickly.

Considering how much time I spend on my computer, I would suggest continuous stream. ;-)

That’s how I understand it. Little packets of information sent in whatever size computers can handle and uploaded or downloaded continuously.

Do you have cable or DSL?
Cable can get congested if there are many people on the same infrastructure at once. Slowdown would occur during peak surfing hours like 6pm to 11pm.
You could have alot of signal noise which could indicate bad lines, a bad tap, a bad splitter, or modem. Your cable provider, as well as you, can see this from viewing your modem. This can be diagnosed by your ISP.
If you are using WiFi, it can be all kinds of things causing this. Poor radio reception and overlapping channels are usually to blame. If you are using WiFi, connect directly to your modem and or router to troubleshoot.

Yes, I’m using WiFi, and paying a friend for use of their Modum which sits nearby ‘pumping stuff out’.
I think mine comes on a slow boat from China.
So, you pay your buddy to use their wi-fi? If you stop paying do they change their password?

Those are funny. I’m just awaiting for somebody to tie Global Warming into WiFi reception. “You love WiFi, don’t you? Then sign this petition for greater regulation by the gov. Protect the planet, and take a bite out of Apple!!”
