DETROIT – A Detroit police pilot project is using a gunfire detection system to help officers pinpoint where shots are being fired in the city.

Police Chief James Craig tells The Detroit News that since the program began Sept. 22 the ShotSpotter system detected what appeared to be 24 shootings. Craig says testing is being done on the system and "tweaking" needs to be done.

Craig didn't specify where the system is being tested, how many sensors are employed or how long the pilot program will last.

Not that this *prevents anything* just gets the janitors to the area to clean-up sooner.

Try the virtually free system attached to the sides of the heads of the police called ears.

"A Detroit police pilot project is using a gunfire detection system to help officers pinpoint where shots are being fired in the city."

Oh, this one is easy! No money need be spent! I can answer the question of where the gunfire came from in Detroit?

It came from that empty building over there!

help officers pinpoint where shots are being fired in the city.

I would think that an eyewitness calling 911 would be more accurate........

Detecting gunfire isn’t the problem. The problem is letting these thugs go (if/when they ever get caught) after serving months of their sentences. By the time these thugs reach 18, they’ve already “served” numerous “lengthy” prison sentences.

I hope the sensors are bullet-proof. Target practice anyone?

Hehe. I worked in Detroit for quite a few years. This system is going to get a
serious workout.

This is about the seventy-ninth story of this type that's been written since the mid-80s. Automatic system, based on acoustics, that will almost instantly pinpoint the location of gunfire within a city.

If they ever do get this idea working, you'll see remotely controlled fireworks set off in synchrony with any real shooting. Guy in the back seat of a drive-by vehicle will be tasked with setting them off by means of a cell phone call.

Since you haven't seen that yet, you know that the bad guys have no fear of this type of system.

Didn’t this system just fail miserably in another test run?

Not really sure what the point is. A good police chief combined with open carry stand your ground laws have driven the violent crime rate to its lowest in nearly 50 years.

That list is by no means exhaustive. That just represents the results of 4 minutes 41 seconds of research, which is apparently more than Detroit did before signing onto this boondoggle.

Next Up: Light Rail!

Sound bounces off buildings, with the multiple reflections confusing the system.
How about working on the source of the shootings? Violent criminals with no value system posessing guns.
