Yankees star Derek Jeter bows out at Fenway
Boston Globe ^ | Dan Shaughnessy

It’s the same ballpark where Babe Ruth played his rookie season in 1914. It’s the same hardball theater where Ted Williams homered on his final big league swing, Sept. 28, 1960. It’s where Mickey Mantle made his last out on the same date in 1968.

And on Sunday, it’s where Derek Sanderson Jeter will finish a 20-year major league career that defined a game and an era.

Cities, teams, ballparks, legends, dates. Everything connects in baseball. Degrees of separation are minimal. Ruth played with Lefty Gomez, who played with Early Wynn, who played with Tommy John, who played with Don Mattingly, who played with . . . Jeter.

And Teddy Ballgame played with Ike Delock, who played with Yaz, who played with Wade Boggs, who played with . . . Jeter.

There are a lot of things to be cynical about sports and professional athletes nowadays. But Derek Jeter played the game hard. He played to win, but he played with class and dignity. Thank you, Derek. You were a true champion.

Thank you, Derek. You were a true champion.

Derek Jeter supported hussein, the illegal muzzie usurper who has orchestrated the knock out game and the destruction of American values. Ergo, Derek Jeter is in the same category as Ted Kennedy to me.

He'll be back to take a bow of sorts next season. Count on it.

How can we miss him when he won't go away?

I’m a huge Yankee fan - have been all my life. One of the highlights of my life was a private tour of Yankee Stadium in 2005 - it was a surprise retirement gift from my organization. I had tears flowing the entire time....have pix of me in the bullpen, the Yankee dugout, Yankee locker room....oh my, what a day! And Jeter is one class act!

“Is he finally gone?”

We’ll see. I am waiting to see if he stays retired. Clemons and Farve have already set a precedent.

3.2.1. until haters begin what they do best....

Jeter was clean, played the game right, was WELL respected by foes and stayed out of trouble....

I don’t care if he was a democrat, fascist or communist...VERY FEW PRO athletes had Jeter’s integrity...

Seems like only 20 years ago that George Costanza taught him how to hit.

Tough crowd. I don’t care how my dentist votes. I just care if he is a good dentist. If the kid who mows my lawn voted for Obama, but he does good work for what I pay him, I can respect him for that. Jeter gave people their money’s worth when he played baseball. That is what I respect.

"Jeter was clean..."

Rat Bob Beckel on the Five said Jeter spread STDs to his girl friends.

Don't know if that's true, but he was (is) a good ballplayer.

I agree. I damned well don’t care about the political leanings of my airline pilot or my surgeon. Their skills are what matter.

Some people even deprive themselves of some great movies because of the star’s politics. Sad. !

I’m a Rays fan, have been for many years, cringe when all the Yankee fans show up at the Trop. Jeter was a class act, just like Rivera. I wish he’d played for us. And he’ll be in some ballpark somewhere, coaching the next generation.

Folks like you are the haters of those who speak the truth. Off the field would you use Jeter as a role model for who your daughter should date or who you son emulate with women?

You know...please don't answer. There are far too many alleged conservatives here that for whom biblical values mean nothing. If you don't answer I can at least hope you're not one of them.

True story. I actually vet my vet. For a number of years, I was quite pleased with my veterinarian and he did a fine job. He was a Yankee who got his degree at Cornell. I was able to overlook both of those negatives since the work he performed was otherwise satisfactory. But in the fall of 2008, during what began as an amicable conversation, he mercilessly mocked Governor Sarah Palin. I asked if he planned to vote for hussein in the November 2008 general election. He told me that he most certainly would and added that having Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency was unacceptable. I stormed out of the office and made it clear that I would do everything I could to steer my friends and colleagues away from his vet clinic.

Fortunately, being here in Texas gives me choices. I found another vet and pre-qualified him in an interview session. Not only is he a Southerner but he graduated from Auburn and is a Tea Party supporter! He now has my business and my other animal owning friends now patronize his clinic.

So, yes, I take a person's politics seriously regardless of the venue or endeavor. I don't want a penny of mine to go to anyone who supports the leftist agenda of abortionism, homosexualism, gun-grabbing or islam. As much as possible, I purchase only non-union made goods and deal with only Conservatives and Christians (as well as Conservative Jews -- that's my very fine, pro-Israel dentist). Call me narrow-minded and intolerant if you like. I take those terms as badges of honor along with creationist, Bible-thumper, gun nut, McCarthyite, right-winger, redneck and so on.

I’m not trying to pick on you, but I have never, ever, understood that sort of adulation of a sports franchise/team by adults. I just don’t get it.
