Sad. It means the end of summer around here.

Temperatures should be good for an August race. Rain forecast but temps should be in the mid 70s.

It was 50 degrees here last night.

They’re putting up windmill signs all around the track and area.

Have not heard whether Tony will race this weekend. I know his name has been entered, but….

I personally think, and its the result of the tragic incident, that he shouldn’t race again until the investigation is complete and he is cleared of possible negligent homicide/vehicular manslaughter charges. Yes, its tough but we are talking loss of life her. I hope Tony understands it’s for the good of the sport and to show respect to the Ward family. It’d be a nasty black eye to everyone involved to race this weekend and then face some serious charges next week.

Just started paying real attention (i.e., actually watching the races) to NASCAR last year. I'm unclear on the Chase--I've probably learned more about Curling from watching the Winter Olympics. Perhaps you can help me, briefly.

Here's what I think I've gleaned:
(1) the Chase qualifiers are vying for entry into the season's championship race(s) and, no doubt, some hefty tangible rewards
(2) race performance points accumulate year-long to determine the twelve (?) qualifiers
(3) even though few actually qualify, other racers get to race alongside them in the final races.

Am I sorta close? Plus, what determines the actual Chase champion? Total Points, or order of finish in a certain race, or what exactly?

I'd appreciate anyone taking a moment to enlighten me briefly.

Thanks for that link. It looks like 16 make the chase and four are eliminated weekly. It appears the year's champion is determined by total points, rather than finishing first in the final race, since Johnson won the 2013 Chase but Hamlin won the final race.

But I'm guessing it's not just those final four running in the final race--it's a full field.

Yes a full field runs at each race. The cars not in the chase are still racing for the weekly purse which is good money, for points fund money paid out at the end of the year, and to get their sponsors on tv and in front of the spectators.

I read that the lowest payout in 2013 for a non chase team that ran all the chase races was $709,000.

If you read motorsports history, what’s scary is the number of spectators killed in the old days.
Crowd control was non-existent.
