According to a Marine Corps Gunny, real men don’t get sad!

True, but then so is heart disease, cancer, and tooth decay.
I don't thinking you're in the camp that is of the opinion that we shouldn't treat any malady - are you?
That's amazing...

He was a jack of all trades and master of all of them.
“Its not depression, it is the human condition, realizing life sucks and there is very little one can do about it, then we get old and broken down, friends betray you and furthermore there is no point to all this suffering.”
IMHO, what you are describing is demoralization, which is a little different than depression. If you have clinical biochemical depression, even when things are seemingly good you can’t enjoy them. Demoralization can be caused by lots of things (betrayal, injustice, declining health - like what you pointed out), and is prominent when you feel helpless to undo or fix these things. Depression can result from demoralization, but they are different.
I personally feel that the world will always leave you disappointed if your priorities and/or expectations are secular. The only thing that has made a difference in my life when I’ve feel hopeless is the knowledge that there is a God. People, as a whole, will always disappoint. It helps me personally to see children laugh, and to spend ‘simple’ time just enjoying the beauty God has put into the world. Nonetheless, sometimes life is very hard. I think the only way to avoid hurt, is to be entirely insensitive to it - which is not a desirable direction to take in life.

True. I found Jesus and it helps me endure.
Christians have to endure this crazy world too. There’s a reason many will sometimes say, “Come quickly, Lord.”
A lot of times we may feel ready to leave this crazy world but we trust that the Lord still has us here for a reason.
True
Nope, I go to the doctor at the drop of a hat
I’ve been depressed since Nov 2008.
Yes, everybody gets sad, because bad things happen. People who are cured of depression or never had it get sad. Sadness is normal and realistic, but it's also temporary. Depressed people convince themselves that bad things happen all the time and events that cause sadness are permanent and continuous.
It’s not that some think it’s less serious than it is, it’s those that confidently state “oh it’s only......” as if they know. As if it’s all just a mirage, instead of real pain.
I too suffer from depression and have been treated for it for 15 + years, life is much better.
DO NOT BE AFRAID, speak to you Doctor about it and get the help available, Life Is Good.
So true.
Have your vitamin D checked! Many doctors are slow to believe the data.
There is no universal magic cure. You have to reach deep and find an inner strength to cope. It is very hard.
Did it start sometime between 1800 and 2400 hrs on November 4, 2008? Same here.
Since then there have been no really good days only days that don’t suck but even those are getting more numerous.
BTTT
And don't forget the 'helpful' FReepers who blurt out "A walk in the fresh air will snap you out of it. Never fails. Exercise and and a gluten free diet (or substitute some other quack idea) will cure it. Think positive"... Well, didn't work for my mother who need 9 ECT treatments, or me.. on my fifth or sixth AD right now (Effexor is working pretty well, for now).
My mother and I have been religious all along. Doesn't make it better during periods of demoralization and despair In fact, I have come to realize that major depression and other psychiatric symptoms are, in part, my cross to bear.
