Did you know that an estimated $41.7 billion - billion - is currently held in government unclaimed-property programs? Some of that unclaimed money could be yours.
Sound like a scam? It isn't, although some scam companies and individual scammers will try to charge you fees to recover it.
Warning: If someone asks for a fee to search for unclaimed money, don't pay. It's a free search.
Before I tell you how to find your unclaimed money, though, here's how it gets unclaimed in the first place.

Look in the Unclaimed Funds of the State Comptroller’s office. Fill out the form and fill it in.
^ meant file it electronically.
Somehow I ended up on a pay for information site?
I discovered I had about $750 in unclaimed funds with my state. Where it came from, I have no idea but it originated in a town in northern Michigan where I grew up but left in 1969.....
What a crock of shit!
BINGO!!!!!
It’s my lucky day! I went to the site and apparently I didn’t pick my last student paycheck while in college, 10 years ago. $58 will be coming my way. Woo hoo!
I recently scoured the website for each state that I have lived in. SC, TX, AZ and NY.
Would up with $600 returned to me.
It asked for me to pay too. Not gonna do it! :)
I’m rich. I found 24.95!
I think most state governments have their own websites with unclaimed property lists.
Here’s the one for Wisconsin.

And here’s one that’s national:

Hey Mom! Recognize any names on those lists?
So far this year as a result of my wife following up on this we’ve gotten $52,000 in funds from my Grandfathers estate.
Simply had to prove my mom had passed and I was the last alive in the family.
Just do it, ya never know.
Wow!
Every state runs their own claims service. This is NOT a scam. I personally received a $500 check from a hospital stay back in 2001. They had transcribed 2 numbers in my home address, and the money was never sent to me. This is 100% legit.
I don’t doubt that, But the link I followed from her site WAS a scam.
DON’T use any site that asks you to pay. The best are missingmoney.com and unclaimed.org. Eventually you will end up at a state dept. of revenue. Try every state you’ve lived in. Women, try your maiden names.
I got $500 and some last year. Evidently it was something to do with some auto body repair place I vaguely remember doing business with in the 90s. They had garbled my address and had me living in Monroe WA with a Seattle street address and zip code, so probably any mail sent out about it had just come back to them.
I especially recommend this for people who move a lot or have worked at a lot of different jobs.
