Decades ago, my family went camping with another family at Punta Banda in Baja. The guys, including my 8-yr-old son, played “dune buggy” and rolled the VW. The two men were in need of stitches as was my son, who had a head wound. I drove several miles as darkness fell to the “hospital” in Ensenada.

The emergency room was horrible. Wounds were cleaned by women with bare hands and tap water in a dented basin. Blood covered the floor from other patients/victims, it took hours to be seen. The doctors were heroes, smart, young, doing their best, sewed up my son very capably when it was our turn at last. Then, because they had no drugs on hand, we had to wake up the pharmacist down the street to have prescription for antibiotic filled, took it back to the hospital where they injected it into him.

Next day, back in CA, our regular doc commended the stitches, and only added a tetanus shot to the treatment. But our friend, who’d had 70 or more stitches, was in real trouble, had to go through surgery to clean out the wound, his arm didn’t work well for another year. PLUS, he was considered a criminal in Mexico, because he’d been driving and never could go back to Mexico again without being arrested. Not that he would, given what happened.

Moral of the story: Go to Hawaii or Florida.

I met a guy (many years ago) on a flight from Johannesburg to Rio who was a general practitioner in a small Canadian town called Smithers,BC.He told me that every few years he took a leave from his job in Canada and spent a month or two doing volunteer work in a hospital in Soweto,the black slum area of Johannesburg.The stories he told me were jaw dropping,particularly given that I was a hospital administrator at the time.Story after story of Third World conditions in the hospital (no equipment,no cleanliness,no supplies,no staff) and Third World diseases (exotic tropical fevers he'd never heard of until he worked there).

Read the comments too. One of them mentions how "the poor" in Venezuela are "much, much poorer" under Chavez' rule. It said before him, at least they had toilet paper.

Maybe someone should inform the poor here, that what happened to the poor in Venezuela (more poverty) is what they will "get" if they keep voting for the so called "free chit".

On a side note, let's not forget that all the wonderful politicians voted to inflict O care on us while exempting themselves from it.

Could it be possible that they know this healthcare plan is a disaster? Nah.. they are warm and compassionate people who take good care of us peasants. They should vote themselves another pay raise.

Same old story -- in communist places with strict gun control for citizens, and lots of armed police and other criminals, the shootings and deaths are more numerous.

In places where the law-abiding citizens are well-armed, there are less shootings and deaths.
