The next Olympics to be awarded, a little more than a year from now, will be the 2022 Winter Games. Rather than going to the strongest bid, the games may end up going to the last city standinga long list of potential hosts have given up on their Olympic dreams because the whole thing is one huge, useless waste of money.
Yesterday, Krakow, Poland, officially withdrew its bid for the games, a day after a citywide referendum where 70 percent of voters came out against hosting the Olympics. "Krakow is closing its efforts to be the host of the 2022 Winter Games due to the low support for the idea among the residents," said mayor Jacek Majchrowski.

Detroit would be a Awesome paintball battlefield.
Ever heard of Telemark Resort in Wisconsin. It’s a Cross Country center. I’m sure there are more that a few ski jumps in the UP. Downhill would be the issue.
And move the summer games PERMANENTLY to Greece..it would help the country..
Good idea for the Summer Olympics. For the Winter Olympics, make some northern European country host it, or maybe US or Canada. And as another poster suggested, make the venue permanent and use it as an Olympic training site the rest of the time.
Other than hockey, I don't think Detroit offers any suitable winter games venues.
We don’t want it it.
Remember when Phoenix was denied the right to host the Winter Olympics because Arizona didn’t have a holiday to honor Martin Luther King? Well, that’s been taken care of, and Arizona now has such a holiday. So Phoenix, or better still, Yuma, should be the site of the next Winter Olympics.
Winter Olympics in the desert? Really?
Does Arizona have ski resorts in the mountains of Arizona? I know places such as Flagstaff gets lots of snow in the winter, not sure if they have ski facilities though.
good point. Do today’s young people even care about big events such as the Olympics? Wonder what the TV ratings for the Olympics were, wonder if NBC made any money on their huge investment in that?
This is amazing, to think that they can’t find enough places in the world who want to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, so they can’t do a bidding process.
The best bet would be to set up an “athlete games”, with low budget everything and grandstands at only millionaire prices, and pay per view.
No b.s. about amateur athletes, so professionals can join in. And individuals, as well as national teams, can compete.
One sport at a time, and only those sports that can support a paid audience. And a lot of those sports could be atypical, like extreme fighting and Kumite, professional style wrestling, swordfighting, and even ‘warfighting’ with real guns and blanks, and laser-tag casualties, calculated not just by uniform sensors but by real time computer analysis from overhead cameras.
Good for Krackow. Denver won the olympics back in the 70s, until the city went to the voters with the bill to pay for it. Then the city leaders got a shock that the citizens didn’t want the games, because they voted down the funding. Then Denver had to go back to the olympic committe and tell them they weren’t doing it after all. That still makes me proud.
Hell no, this is the perfect time for zero and mooochelle to push Chicago! The perfect place for the olympics that nobody wants, the place where nobody wants to go pushed by the people nobody respects.
But think of all the tourism dollars that curling venue could have brought to Denver.
Why not use the facilities already built, say Salt Lake City, Lake Placid etc?
There is one of those a few exits down the Garden State Parkway from our location, same name. No snowmaking or facilities.
Gastonia, NC.
Lake Placid is actually a very rational suggestion. Just about all of the infrastructure is in place there.
