Nigel Farage tonight claimed victory in the European elections, becoming the first 'insurgent party' to top a national vote.
With results still being declared, Mr Farage broke cover to predict he will humiliate the Westminster parties, pushing Labour and the Tories into second and third.
Support for Ukip has surged by more than 12 per cent, outstripping a more modest boost in votes for Labour, while the Lib Dems faced near-wipeout, with some calling for Nick Clegg to resign.
Mr Farage said: 'Ukip is going to win this election and yes that will be an earthquake because never before in the history of British politics has a party that will be seen to be an insurgent party ever topped the polls in a national election.
'We go on surprising people. I am delighted with the way the campaign has gone. It has been a pretty remarkable journey.
'We have formed the people's army to fight the establishment. I love Europe, it's the European Union I have a problem with.'

You don’t have to give up your sovereignty in order to have good ties with the rest of Europe.
Mr Farage suggested he aimed to destroy the Conservative Party, not make pacts with it.

UKIP’s main issue is getting the UK out of the EU.
If they don’t get out of the EU then the immigration issue is a moot point.
Farage is almost always on point. He rarely slips up.
This is what the tea party needs is someone who is sharp, well spoken and on point and who doesn’t go off into the weeds on every little issue.
