SAO PAULO, Brazil - Their faces hide behind scarves, gas masks and motorcycle helmets. TV images show them smashing cars, hurling bricks at police and setting tires ablaze on the streets of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian politicians have claimed they are a national security threat.
But who really are these protesters who plan to run riot at the World Cup as soon as the inaugural game kicks off on June 12?
Brazil's police allege the militants form an extremist group called the Black Bloc, and say they are watching its leaders. The local press has published exposes claiming that the Black Bloc is funded by foreigners intent on spoiling the nation's moment of glory.
However, speaking to GlobalPost, a veteran of Brazil's radical protest movement said the Black Bloc is not an organization at all. Rather, it's a tactic of demonstrators who are leaderless, angry and determined to raise hell.
"It is the 10 percent of the demonstration that don't run from police, who are not scared. Nobody owns it," said the protester, who identified himself only as AM because of the risks of arrest.
The tactic, AM explained, consists of militant protesters, often masked and wearing dark colors, swelling together in a block during demonstrations. They break into runs, jump and shout, helping to provoke confrontation. And when police inevitably react, they are not scared to hit back.
"It is the violence that has always been in the slums of Brazil but now has come to the center of town," said AM, a 32-year-old native of Sao Paulo.

Isn't this a contradiction?
As far as I can determine, modern Anarchists are not anarchists at all -- they are people violently pushing the ideas of Karl Marx, attempting to implement of coercive system of one world government and centralized control of the means of production within the global economy.
Communists, pure and simple.
These are simply socialist terrorists.
The media mislabels them to server the purpose of tarnishing the right.
We cannot let them control the language and we defeat them every time we point it out.
Don't get me wrong, we don't want anarchy because we believe in a Constitutional Republic of Laws. It's just that the description of what is taking place here is completely inaccurate.
These are socialist/communist terrorists resorting to violence like their NAZI forefathers.
“It is a negative protest. They know what they don’t want but not what they want,” Solano said. “But this is because it is a historic moment of change. Many people are fed up with the old system but a new system hasn’t been built yet.”
The writer just gave away the lie that anarchy isn’t a leftist movement.
Anarchists don’t want a system. These so-called anarchists are authoritarian leftists.
Saw a great facebook post a while back. It showed a wall painted with the graffito: “SPREAD ANARCHY!”
A line had been drawn through those words, and this was painted below:
“Don’t tell me what to do!”
The police could react to attacks in a way that the attackers won’t be able to ever do it again.
What they want is the impossible dream - Something For Nothing. It’s the oldest scam know to mankind.
Bolsheviks and Red Guard if you will.
If American anarchists were really tough, they would go to places like Brazil and act up. They will be dealt with much differently than they are here.
Communists, pure and simple.
This is also what I believe. You never hear anything about abolition of the State from these "anarchists."
Of course, classical anarchism opposes the State secondarily. Its primary opposition is to private property, and regards the State as the creation of private property and the lesser evil. For this reason (as another FReeper has pointed out) anarchists have always been happy to cooperate with totalitarian Marxists because private property is enemy number one to them. Then after the revolution they get lined against the wall by their allies and shot. But they never seem to learn.
Exactly, it’s like the libertopians who wouldn’t mind tyranny if drugs and perversion were legal.
That’s why we have the likes of Jane Fonda, John Kerry and our super liberal politicians who acquired their notoriety by protesting the Vietnam War.
Had we treated them as the traitors that they are the outcome of the war would have been different and the country would today be led by politicians more loyal to American principles.
Perhaps I expressed myself badly. I read your post #4 and it says exactly what I was trying to say. You may not agree with my assessment, but I certainly agree with your assessment.
True anarchists (as opposed to the phony crypto-Commie “anarchists” the author describes) seek the complete abscense of government, and so properly belong on the extreme right of the continuum as the polar opposite of totalitarians who advocate for total government and belong on the extreme left...
A Communist is a Communist whatever they choose to call themselves...And the current crop call themselves Anarchists, but are really Commies...Pay little or no attention to the names they call themselves or what they say, and watch instead what they do...
“Anarchists dont want a system. These so-called anarchists are authoritarian leftists.” I totally agree...The system they seek and are working to install (whether the useful idiots understand or not) once the current order is overthrown is Pure Unadulterated Commie!
Today, between China and the Soviet Union, the death toll--depending on scholarly estimate--ranges from 90 to 150 million dead from the effects of Communism. And look at how Communism decimated what could have been the most prosperous country in Latin America in Cuba.
But all those people murdered by Communism - Doncha see? It was FOR THEIR OWN GOOD!!
