“Going My Way” will win the Oscar sweepstakes for 1944, grabbing 7 of the little gold men at the award ceremony in 1945, including Best Picture. After previewing the movie yesterday I will give it a 7 on the sap scale. I attribute its success in part to Bing Crosby’s immense popularity at this time (especially with Bosley Crowther, it would seem) and the exalted standing of the Catholic Church in popular culture. The latter is hard to imagine 70 years later. Three stars for “Going My Way.”

Netflix has “Going My Way” on DVD.

I LOVE “Going My Way”!

There is a scene from Carmen in the movie with Rise Stephens, and a great song “Swinging on a Star”.

Terrific Movie! :-)

That was such a gushing review that I suspected it was a satire!

Good thing the moslems didn’t get wind of the one at the bottom right. “allah be Praised”

There surely would have been some spontaneous protestin’!

I don’t think theater goers of the mid-1940s would have cared for my version of “Pick Up Girl” based on the proceedings of a modern day juvenile court. They would not have been prepared to react to rampant teen pregnancy, tats, flashing gang signs, cursing out the judges, and addictions to a wide array of drugs and controlled substances. Not to mention the random and brutal acts of violence.

Oh, oh. I can imagine tomorrow's news:

"Rioting spread throughout the Muslim world, believed caused by an offensive 70-year-old advertisement posted by Homer_J_Simpson on the web site of the right-wing hate group 'Free Republic.' A State Department Emergency Response team was reported surrounding Simpson's compound in California to take him into custody."

Maybe I should take a vacation.

Seeing as how the play received a favorable reception in Boston, I bet the audience didn't even get all that realistic a portrayal of New York street life in 1944.

Remember, Homer, we read some time back about the casting for “Allah Be Praised!”? It was a flop!
