Vicious Dog Drama In Pontiac; Cops Shoot German Shepherd In Early Morning Showdown (2nd Dog Sought)
Deadline Detroit ^ | February 7th, 2014

A German shepherd suspected in a series of vicious and unprovoked attacks on people in Pontiac this week died in a face-off with Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies in Auburn Hills early Friday, Eric D. Lawrence reports in the Free Press.

The dog was one of two now-dead German shepherds that authorities said had terrorized residents and emergency workers Wednesday and Thursday. In one attack Thursday morning, the dogs bit and dragged a 56-year-old Pontiac woman down a city street. She was rescued by a passing motorist.

The Oakland Press reports a sheriff’s deputy shot one of the dogs when both charged him after the attack on the 56-year-old woman. The second dog escaped and was hit by a car while it was being pursued. The missing dog was later shot by a deputy in a wooded area near Perry Street and Giddings Road just after 2 a.m. Friday after it was initially spotted in Auburn Hills and unsuccessful attempts to capture it were made.

Dustin Blitchok writes that when Maria Gialdi, the 56-year-old victim, got out of her car on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon, she felt sorry for the two German shepherds she saw trotting down the road toward her. The feeling didn’t last.

“They looked at me, we made eye contact and they just made a beeline toward me. They just started attacking me and I started yelling for help. Nobody came to help. The next door neighbor was actually shoveling snow. He didn’t even look up,” said Gialdi, 53, who received about 50 stitches on the puncture wounds at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. Plastic surgery will likely be needed.

People like to point at pit bulls, but an enraged German Shepherd is a terrifying animal.

I'm guessing these are basically wild dogs going after easy prey that doesn't bog them down in the snow.

Ah, gee. Stories like this remind me strongly of the horrible visceral fear of dogs I had as a child. The big, strong, wolf-like dogs are the worst and reading this does not help.

The story did not say whether these were trained to attack, or were feral strays.

Yes they are.

They are an animal that needs to be respected, and if they get out of control as appears to be the case in this situation, then this action was justified, though to me still sad because I really admire them.

I would not ever want to be on the business end of one.

Speaking of pit bulls the people across the street sneaked one in and would let it run at night. It came up on our porch one night growling at my wife. The neighbors have been looking and asking. Seems the dog ran away a few days ago...

German Shepherds used to be the most popular dog in America.

I’ve had German Sheppards and they were great dogs but dogs are dogs. My Jack Russell would be dangerous if he weighed 70 or 80 lbs.

Any enraged dog is a terrifying animal. Pits are particularly bad because they clamp on and won’t let go and also because they are extremely muscular and have very thick necks (preventing the victim from strangling them, which can be done with other dogs).

Sadly, these declining towns and cities are often full of semi-wild dogs. A lot of them are dogs dumped by drug dealers who had them for protection or by people who raised them for dog fighting, so they’re not friendly.

I knew a man who raised massive German Shephards for sale overseas. They were much bigger than 70 or 80 pounds.

Clearly you have fallen for the Pit Bulls clever plan. The Pit Bulls recognizing the bad publicity and the direction of public opinion has organized a secret cell that disguises themselves as different breeds and carry out random attacks so as to distract us away from the actual Pit Bull attacks!

There is only one thing to save us and that is to understand that all dog attacks are carried out by PIT BULLS!

It’s big among the black community in the small town where I live, too.

Local LE doesn’t seem to do much about it (there’s an occasional bust) but many animal shelters here have seriously scarred and aggressive dogs that had obviously outlived their usefulness and were dumped on the streets and picked up by animal control at some point.

One of my next door neighbors in a sort of up and coming part of town is an elderly black church-going lady who is very sweet herself but who lets her grandson raise fighting dogs in chicken wire cages in her backyard. Nobody in the neighborhood dares to complain - despite the noise and the stench - because they don’t want their houses burned to the ground during the night.

So it’s a complicated story...

LOL

Have you ever considered writing novels or something of that nature? Or short horror stories?

Most strangers won't come within 10 feet of mine even though they are very friendly with people. That being said, GSDs have a more powerful bites per pit bulls.

Yes, pitbulls are part of a class of 'bully dogs'!. I include German Shepherds and Rottweilers in that class. Though German Shepherds are intelligent, they are a lot of dog to control.
