With gardening at a low level, the cleaning, fixing, and organizing indoors continues. I won't start any seed till February, and most will be April before I start them.
On this date, the cable car was patented in 1871-an interesting tidbit from the Farmer's Almanac.

I am an old person but new gardener. I have some drift
roses, planted this summer in SC and want to know when and how to prune them and feed them. Thanks for any advice.
It is 35 deg. F. at 8:00AM here in central TX.
Forecast high for the day is 57 deg F and sunny.
Wheat finally is showing signs of growing. It has been unusually cold here in TX this winter.
Am planning to water my blackberry and strawberry plants today. The have been nipped by our very cold weather.
Will probably water the dormant trees at the farm this weekend. Preventative measure.

I have been reading more about permaculture stacking planting and companion planting. We live in very heavy clay soil and this has made everything a struggle.
Any input in either if these topics is appreciated.

Oh bgill, why’d ya have to say brussel sprouts? (My favorite veg) I haven’t summoned up the courage to try them yet (but I have seeds). Supposedly, they’re not easy. Is that untrue?
I harvested my garlic a little too late and it’s starting to sprout. I’ve researched ways of preserving it (chop and freeze, chop and refrigerate in olive oil, etc.), but I’d like garden FReeper input. Do you guys have a way of preserving garlic that works well?

I am in SWest MO. Got a quick, heavy snow last night. 10 minute flurry and gone.
I am interested in what seeds you are starting in Feb. I have never done starter seeds, but want to this year. Trying to figure a way to do so without a green/hothouse.
Am putting in some raised beds so we can plant a bit earlier. Just have not decided on what to start early.
Hi all, just checking in. No gardening going on here in west Michigan. It is a warmer 20 degrees today, we have about 2 feet of snow in the ground and almost 60 inches so far this winter. I do have a basil plant on my windowsill, taken from a cutting fro the garden that spouted easily in water last fall. It’s even flowering. I’ll have to make a trip to the local botanical gardens just to be around some greenery or I really will go nuts.
Planted collards and red radicchio the other day. They handled the frost with no problems.
It feels like spring here in the Phoenix area. Low to mid 70s during the day. Just beautiful!
I did something new this weekend - got some seeds from a seed bank! I “checked out” some seeds from the seed bank, then will grow them and if I’m successful, I’ll harvest the seeds and bring some back to the seed bank.
I got some Hopi Pale Grey squash seeds from someone who grew them here in AZ, some other winter squash the grown by the native tribes here, tobacco seed pods and cotton.
I’m growing tobacco because I found out they have sticky leaves that supposedly attract aphids, gnats and other nasties, and the flowers supposedly attract hummingbirds. The guy there showed me how to get the seeds out of the dried pods and they are TINY.
The prepper in me wanted to grow the cotton. After all, it isn’t just food we’ll need when it all breaks loose. I’m planning on growing two plants and just harvesting the seeds to save them.
Consider this a dirty double-dog dare, and if one of you are cast for an episode, I'll re-subscribe to satellite TV ;)

Got an email today from my favorite nursery over in East Texas.
They have a flash sale going on Through Friday on “Native” fruit & nut trees at $5 per tree.
This is only the “Native” trees, but they have a great selection of other stuff.
I bought over 30 trees from them a couple of years back and was very happy with what I got and the prices.
Thought someone might have an interest here. Think I am going to place another order. This is the time of the year to be planting bare root trees.
