Auto racing 100 yrs ago was incredibly dangerous, and far more spectators were killed and maimed than drivers and riding mechanics.
The first race at Indy (not the first 500) had 2 driver, 2 riding mechanic and 2 spectator deaths.
A friend of mine was in an accident years ago that took out one of the Edsel Fords. (There are a bunch of them)
probably more than the cars themselves....LOL
