My guess is that it just ignores all of your favorites and the links you are seeing are “promotional”, targeted advertising links.
I understand Google mail is doing the same thing, uses your e-mail to find you targeted ads.
It's familiar, I know it, and it can't be any more nor less prone to problems than any/all the rest (imo)
When I open a new Chrome tab, FR always shows up in top left corner of the 8 sites featured. Just checked and it was still there.
More likely someone paid ‘em a bunch of money to move their icons up.
It might have to do with a cache having been cleared and a history will have to be built up again.
Why are you wasting your time with (cough) Government (couth) Google?
“Chrome sends details about its users to Google through both optional and non-optional user tracking mechanisms.”

Load up Ghostery (a pop up blocker and malicious site blocker). You can get is from Google’s play store through chrome. Google doesn’t care about FR, sounds like you got “targeted advertising” and most likely from some site you visited over the holidays. I noticed a few sites I frequent for purchases had considerably more links on their sites that were trying to harvest info from me and some trying to augment my browsers behavior. (note: I have no affiliation with ghostery).
There are other websites?
Google software, all of it, is nothing but a phishing expedition. That’s why they can offer their products “free”.
I don’t use g(.)(.)gle anything - not their search engine, not their browser, not their android tablets or phones. Every keystroke you make is radioed back to the mothership.
Apple and Micro$oft are not much better, except they charge you for the privilege of allowing them to spy on you.
Void the warranty and put Ubuntu on it... Google it, it’s been done and it works well. Thumb you nose at the mind control types...
Who cares?
It’s still number one on my Chrome, but I don’t use Chrome exclusively.
FreeRepublic still shows up on my most-visited list in Chrome. Don’t know enough about it to offer a suggestion, though.
I tried using Chrome but it sucked. Google being a liberal pisshole has made their lousy software even worse. I dumped it. IE 11 on Win 7 is doing just fine.
First of all, if you’re using chrome, expect to be spied on and don’t be surprised by anything. You couldn’t pay me to use G 0 0 gle anything!
FreeRepublic is the first slot on my ToolBar links. I have unchecked all the times the software wants to install Chrome. FireFox is the way to go.
Good Hunting... from Varmint Al
Why use Chrome anyway? Inferior to Firefox for my use, as it cannot even provide multiple tab rows, but Google is liberal.
I had the same problem; I deleted one of the “frequently visited” tabs at random and then clicked “restore all” and et voila, Free Republic was back in the prime position as it should be. Probably not a real problem.
