[H]ere are the stories of how 15 delightful breeds started meowing.

i have a garbage can cat i got as a rescue cause some drunk fool cut off half her tail tryin to make her a “split tail cat” and it took her a bit to come around but she is now...12 years later...in control...and i dont mind a bit...there is no greater delight
I cannot wait to adopt a rescue.
all I know is love given is love returned and all it cost me was love :-)
My daughter adopted a rescue kitten a few months ago. She’s the sweetest little kitten, affectionate and smart.
I have no idea what breed any of my three cats are. My wife describes them as “pound cats and found cats.”
Our orange tabby came from a shelter; she was the first one we got. Our tortie was a stray who lived in our yard when we moved into our house, and she eventually moved into the house with us and gave birth to our torbie (we had the tortie spayed once her litter was weaned and the torbie at about eleven months). I suspect the tortie might have a little Siamese in her; she’s had a few litters I know of and almost all of them included at least one colorpoint kitten, usually some sort of tabby point. Her last one included a very pretty silver tabby point who now lives with one of my friends in Montana along with one of her littermates.
Both of our Maine Coon kittehs Norman and Olivia are rescues - breeder rejects because they weren’t ‘perfect’.
They’re perfect as far as we’re concerned. Norman’s a brown tabby - totally Coonish except for no ear tufts. Norman’s a real wacky boy.
Olivia’s a black tabby with too short a tail. She glommed onto me as soon we got her home. She came out of the CTU (cat transport unit), hopped in my lap and said, “mine!”
We don;t care.
Every fur baby I’ve ever had has been found and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Queen of the Universe is helping me type, as usual.
All mine are former strays, and presumably mutts. Wouldn’t trade ‘em for the world.
Not a fan of designer cats or dogs.
If you want a cat, just put a can of food by the back door a few days, grab the cat that takes the territory, get it fixed and get it its shots, and you have a new pet.
Or go to the shelter and get one off of death row.
Our cat came from a shelter in 2001. He and his sister were dumped roadside and we brought “Vincent” home.
We should’ve brought home the female, but didn’t. We buit a house as he was growing up with us. He became our chief construction inspector.
When it's a matter of pure cosmetics an human vanity, I agree. Most cats are bred for just that, an certainly it applies to a number of dog breeds as well.
On the other hand, many dog breeds were bred not for appearance, but for function: herding dogs, scent hounds, sight hounds, ratters, retrievers, guard/protection, draft dogs, sled dogs, etc. As such, the breed qualities and characteristics are fairly regularized so even if somebody has no intention of using a dog for what it was bred for, choosing a purebred for certain known tendencies or characteristics may contribute to the quality an success of the human-pet relationship.
thank goodness for pencils or i woodnt get a word in
Actually, in the Russian language, "Donskoy" means "Born downwind of Chernobyl" [catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant]
/s.... not completely
weirdly enuf in russian language obama means ball less
She looks a lot like Miss Olivia. Miss O weighs about 16 pounds, and her favorite places are either on my desktop or on my shoulder while I work. Or try to.
Miss O is large and in charge.
Norman, OTOH, likes to sit in my lap and hit the spacebar.
not that i know anything but a 16 lb cat on my shoulder is one big chip (and people wonder why i am what i am)
When I was a girl I rescued a tiny abandoned kitten I found in my back yard. It took us weeks to convince her to come out of hiding in our house. She remained semi-feral, wanted out each day, but each night climed our California oak and came in through my bedroom window. She was a beautiful long-hair probably with some Persian.
