We’re all a teensy bit mad, but how many true psychopaths do we have among us? Apparently, more than you think.

“Psychopathy is a personality disorder that has been variously described as characterized by shallow emotions (in particular reduced fear), stress tolerance, lacking empathy, coldheartedness, lacking guilt, egocentricity, superficial character, manipulativeness, irresponsibility, impulsivity, and antisocial behaviors such as parasitic lifestyle and criminality,” explains Eric Barker, in The Week.

Now, think about all the people who might fit that description. Then, compare it to the list psychologist Kevin Dutton compiled in The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success. Here are the 10 most likely professions for psychopaths and the 10 least likely.

‘surgeon’ is shown as ‘most likely’ and a ‘Doctor’ is listed as ‘least likely’.

Since all surgeons are also Doctors (I hope), this seems like a conflict. (Yes I know not all Doctors are surgeons).

Isn’t it amazing the author did not include Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Lenin, PolPot, Idi Amin, and Barack Hussein Obama?

POLITICS IS THE LAST REFUGE OF EGOCENTRIC PSYCOPATHS.

That ‘s why we need term limits. Well, one of the reasons. :)

I was going to guess psychiatry, because the people I knew (about) going into psychology at college were some of the most neurotic, disturbed and emotionally unbalanced people I ever met. No wonder we’re getting “redefined” ideas about homosexuality and pedophilia today.

This list is BS, it seems that they created it by looking at how much empathy each job requires to be successful. Not crime statistics or real world examples.

Its totally bogus because it doesn’t include welfare recipients or politicians. These are both major occupations that encompass half of the working population now. Total bull#hit.

I need to know how he came to this conclusion. Did he match the symptoms into a career program or does he have access to private counselor/medical records and found out what careers these people have? This is iVillage.

It doesn’t seem like a very intelligent study. Politicans not Number 1? or even on the list?? Artists are not psycho? Phew.

Artists is another huge one, good call. Notice how the list gives feel good credit to several occupations that are probably held by the majority of this site’s audience.

Beat me to it. I’ve always heard the highest suicide rate for M.D.s is among psychiatrists.

Instead, take John Wayne’s advice: “Well, out here, pilgrim, a man learns to solve his own problems.”

They probably took stats from people dying at the hands of these types. I still dont know why they did not include elected politicians.
