Ford justified killing Mercury because Mercury wasn't providing a sufficient chunk of market share in the US. Ford recently announced how much market share Lincoln has and it makes Mercury look good.
Justin Berkowitz at Car and Driver made the association, citing Ford's 2010 statement explaining why they were ending the Mercury Brand.
Mercury originally was created as a premium offering to Ford and was an important source of incremental sales. Of Ford Motor Companys 16 percent market share in the U.S., Mercury accounts for 0.8 percentage points, a level that has been flat or declining for the past several years.
Berkowitz goes on to point out that Lincoln is doing worse than Merc by the exact same metric. Lincoln held just 0.57 percent of the US market in 2012 and it's on the decline, falling from 0.67 in 2011.
Lincoln had better hope that there's more sentimentality for the brand that gave us the legendary Continental than the one that gave us the greatest Kustom that ever was.
All Righty Then.
Bring back the town car, get rid of the Fusion clone.
I hate Civil War threads.
LOL....I had to read the headline twice, myself ;)
The vertical baleen whale grille design of recent years is a terrible, terrible loser.
what a car!
“I hate Civil War threads.”
I don’t think Lincoln could be doing any worse right now.
My first car was a 73 Montego. Acres of hood covering a little 289.
Doesn’t sound like much engine for that big of a car but the engine was a factory special built for Ford Fairlane police car.
No surprise, look at the cars! Nothing like the days just not long ago. what ever happened to the Town Car and the Continental? Way to go!
Give me a Mopar any day.
2000 Mercury Sable Wagon still going strong with 200,000 miles on it. Nice leather interior, strong V-6, smooth ride.

In addition to bringing out better looking cars that aren’t simply Fords with a different grill and upgraded interior, they need to do away with their idiotic naming convention - MKS, MKT, MKZ, and so on. Bring back names like Continental, Cosmopolitan, etc.
I bought a new car recently and though I gave Caddilac serious consideration Lincoln wasn’t even on my radar. Ford has neglected Lincoln for so long it’s not even the equivelant of a Camry or a Maxima. The brand won’t be around much longer.
I thought it was Booth at the Ford with a Gun.
I have a 2003 Mercury Marauder. It’s easily the sexiest four door ever. However, I live 18 miles outside of the city. The Marauder gets 20 mpg when I baby it. That’s practically 2 gallons of gas to get into the city and back. It costs $12-15 to go further into town and back. So, at 57,000 miles it sits in the garage with desiccant inside to keep the leather nice. When I get another job I’ll drive it again. (Current car is a 2010 Jetta TDI. But it’s tiny.)
Back in the Seventies, I had a friend whose father collected Lincolns. Only one model though. Continental Convertibles, with clamshell/suicide doors and air conditioning. He had a whole floor of them in a large warehouse. Very cool cars! But try working on the wiring under the dash.
My parents had a 1963 Mercury Monterey, which had the slanted back window that you could lower using a switch on the dash. If you opened the vents under the dash (you have to be old to know about those), and lowered the back window even a couple of inches you got a strong draft blowing through the car without the noise of opening a side window.
