Everyone was understandably excited when Windows Phone got its own native YouTube app. That is, until Google decided it violated the terms of service by blocking advertisements and promptly asked Microsoft to remove the app. The two companies kissed, made up and collaborated on a new version that would adhere to Mountain View's developer guidelines. Unfortunately, it appears that, despite Big G's involvement, the latest version of YouTube for Windows Phone still has some issues that can't be overlooked. Only two days after returning, with the ability to upload video added as a bonus, Google has again begun blocking Microsoft's efforts.
In an official statement YouTube said:
"We're committed to providing users and creators with a great and consistent YouTube experience across devices, and we've been working with Microsoft to build a fully featured YouTube for Windows Phone app, based on HTML5. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not made the browser upgrades necessary to enable a fully-featured YouTube experience, and has instead re-released a YouTube app that violates our Terms of Service."
Sources tell us that, specifically, Microsoft was not on board with developing an HTML5 based app. Instead the company quietly went back to work on its own native version and reverse-engineered the ad system in order to satisfy Google's terms of service. Unfortunately, this work-around means that Google can't guarantee the correct ads will be served up, leading the company to revoke Redmond's API key. We've reached out to Microsoft for comment and will update when we hear back.
Update: A Microsoft spokesperson provided us with the following: "Google is blocking our updated YouTube app for Windows Phone. We are working with them to resolve the issue."
Update II: And now, Microsoft has issued a longer response, and it's a doozy. We'll let you have a gander right here.
I think Google and Microsoft should be nationalized, or be strictly regulated like a public utility. If Teddy Roosevelt were alive today, he’d try to have them broken up. They have too much power - and are always pushing their far left agenda.
Which would become more free-market oriented if they were nationalized?
No, what they need is to be broken up.
Google is afraid of Windows Phone. They know it’s better than Android and it’s able to compete on the high and low end of the market thanks to Nokia.
Google is acting like MS of the 90s. But they are smarter than MS they bought off the politicians. Microsoft screwed up and didn’t have a lobbying firm until anti-trust began.
Ah yes...Teddy Roosevelt. The original Progressive.
Screw that...let them all compete, but make it fair for others to compete. Clearly Google should be tried for anti-competitive Monopoly practices for their protection of youtube from being on a competing (better) platform.
Who cares? The MS app store is broken on Win8 (haven’t been able to access it for months; no “fix” works) and I wouldn’t touch windows-phone with a 20-foot pole.

OH GREAT .. break them up ?
Do you mean : "Goo " (the baby channel) and another company called "OOGLE" (men only ) ?
or," Mic " ( for Irishmen), and "o$oft" (for curvacious cougars looking for rich men )?
Are you serious? MS market share is only 3.3% compared to 79% for Android. Apple is trailing Android at 14%. Being in the IT world I've worked with all three (well four if you count blackberry but they are headed for the trash bin of history) and didn't care for MS interface. I hear that a lot from people I talk to.
I don't agree with Google's reasoning and believe it's childish but all of the big three have acted like jerks in the past. MS is just getting a taste of its own medicine.
Why you say that?
NOTHING should be nationalized....
"Google is afraid of Windows Phone. They know its better than Android"
You have to look at growth and future market share.
Guess who is growing faster than Android and Apple in many markets? With Nokia the Windows Phone platform can compete and beat Android where it excels...cheap ass phones. And they can compete and win on the high end (look at the Nokia 1020...no other phone comes close with the camera).
So yes they are afraid of Windows Phone’s growth and future. When you are a market leader you have to look at who your competition will be and not stay static. but the Android ecosystem is so fragmented they can’t really improve the customer experience as good as Apple or Microsoft can. I think the new cheaper iPhone has android worried to. But I wonder if Apple has the ability to pull off a cheap market strategy. They are used to targeting high end only.
Watching a pissing contest between skunks is quite the exciting sport, just so long as you stay waaaaaaaaay back.
I really hate what google has done to Youtube. Google keeps trying to get me to connect accounts. Sorry, not doing it. I had my youtube account long before my google one.
So you think that things would be all better if Obama controlled Microsoft and Google. Briliant. What is your 5 year plan, comrade?
