Yay New Haven. We’re number 7!!!
I was about to post that as well. However, there are places online that perform this slight as well and say that Bethlehem is under Palestinian National Authority Rule, like is is a country.
“What sucks about it? I am guessing the driving (very hilly, narrow streets laid out long before the automobile, many still cobblestone and others rutted with potholes) or the weather (we get more cloudy days than almost anyplace else...moisture from the Great Lakes and Gulf meet up over Ohio and have to dump moisture to get over the mountains to the east)”
***
All of that plus a corrupt Democrat administration, obstructive unions and an inability to get anything done without spending huge amounts of money and time.
I never considered myself “trapped” in Victoria, except the time (1969) when we missed our ferry back to Washington State and had to spend the night with no luggage and little money! LOL. We were treated so well by the managers of 2 hotels — The Empress and the Olympic (?). Because we spent an extra day we were able to buy a chandelier that I had admired and to bring it back into the states without duty. It has resided in 4 houses since and hangs in my dining room today.
We bought it from a Dutchman on a Sunday (probably illegal). The shops were all closed on Sundays in those days. The name of the shop was Van (something) — a made up name. We used the phone book and looked up every Van name in the book until we found somebody who said — :Oh, that’s my cousin who owns that shop and gave us te right number.” We called him — no answer. We drove to his house and left a note that we were touring in the area, seeing the various attractions, and that we would call back every hour. We finally got him at 5 pm.
“Can you do business on a Sunday?” we asked. “AbsoLUTEly!” was his answer. So, we met him at the shop, he already had the chandelier dismantled and was packing it in a box.
I’ve spent a couple of wedding anniversaries at the Empress. One time they were really crowded because of a convention there. I think they were going to stuff us into a broom closet. We called back a couple of times during our trip on the ferry. By the time we arrived, they had ugraded us 3 times (because of the anniversary) until we had a 2 room suite overlooking te harbor. All at the same price we were going to pay for the broom closet.
Atlanta proper is really tricky with areas to avoid and areas that are fine. In general, the tourist area immediately around Centennial Olympic Park, with the Coke Museum, the Aquarium, and CNN, is fine. Go west and south of there, and it gets ugly quick. To the north and east of downtown is generally good.
As you say, Buckhead is not Atlanta, and that part of town is generally all fine, unless Ray Lewis and his posse are visiting the club you have chosen to visit.
And of course, lots of places out in the ‘burbs are fine as well.
LOL, well played.
You need to ping the appropriate party when making a comment like that. That’s a badge of pride!
Tourism is all Victoria has other than gov’t work. We try to NOT annoy our main bread and butter...
We live in South Central Pennsylvania. We are bikers. We find that in restaurants, gas stations, etc. we are treated friendlier below the southern border of PA then above the Southern border of PA. At least up and down the East Coast. Have not done that much westward travel to make a judgement.
But who cares about the city’s woes when our Pirates are in first place? LOL
Ashville sucks and is full of smelly hippies - for the most part.
I am a born and bred Southerner and the city of Atlanta sucks. The burbs around Atlanta aint too bad.
MY father use to say that Sherman could burn the whole damn city down again and he wouldn’t displace one real Southerner. :)
I would have went with Ashwabenon Wisconsin. They were very friendly.
Years ago I used to go down E. 14th occasionally with my hot rod looking for street races. I didn't know it was against the law then :-)
Chaing Mai, Thailand, is not only friendly, but a very pleasant place to visit. I had one of my best meals in years there for about two bucks - including a beer.
In 1970, the California Young Republicans had their convention in Oakland. But that was a long time ago, and seemingly, in a galaxy far, far away.
Bethlehem, ISRAEL used to be VERY friendly.
Bethlehem, palestine, NOT SO MUCH.
Oh heck yeah!
You ask for directions there and they are liable to send you off in the opposite direction out of sheer meanness.
