Somebody in the crowd should have just walked over and started kicking his ass.

well, the direction of the grain does matter... that being said, his kicks don’t seem to have a lot of snap to them and he’s not targeting through the board. like the last couple of kicks... full extension was at the board, resulting in less power.
only once did I have an issue breaking a board (2 actually) ... and it was due to the grains being crossed

Many years ago I saw a martial arts demo in which, for the grand finale, the head Sensi was going to break a board with his thumb.
He broke his thumb! (And you'd better believe he was a-hurtin'!)

Someone slipped in a piece of 3/4” plywood or he’s holding the grain the wrong way on that piece of pine. LOL

Single board, he could have fallen through it. Breaking in the classical martial arts are a very minimal test of power especially at this level. It does not equate to martial or fighting ability. It more of a test of brute force coupled with some technique. Yes I have engaged in breaking in demonstrations. Our Shodan test encompassed 3” with a reverse punch, front kick and a round kick. This guy would have been regarded as a major “putz” or poseur. I have witnessed a Korean 7th dan take 7” with a head strike/butt with the boards spaced so penetration was emphasized. this was in the 60’s before body armor or the Olympics took in TKD. It was totally “old school”

Assaulting building materials .... boards don't hit back.

The ‘black belt’ was thinking about procedure and individual movements way too much. All the snap, crackle and POP was missing from his actions. He should have just stopped trying for about half an hour, then tried it with different attendants or in a different place completely.
What was going on with the crying child? was the kid hit by debris?

He needs to buy some balsa wood.

To give the “artist” his due, the boards need to be held at least somewhat rigidly. Otherwise, fairly pathetic.
