How could KTVU get something so wrong? The San Francisco TV station was the joke of the Internet today when it fell for a prank and broadcast the names of the four pilots on Asiana Air Flight 214. Youd think names like Captain Sum Ting Wong and Wi Tu Lo would have raised a red flag or two, but the station insisted it had verified the names with the National Transportation Safety Board.
It turns out that might be true. ABC News Steven Portnoy is reporting that an NTSB summer intern is responsible for confirming the obviously fake names.

So the government is involved, in confirming this?
The first person was the one who gave the names to the reporters originally.
Then the station tried to confirm the names with the NTSB and the intern understood the joke and played along with it.
Makes the person at the station look incredibly stupid.
So it was just a Former Rogue Low Level NTSB Summer Intern that gave the confirmation?
The summer intern’s name is Autumn Ladoff.
You who engineered this, the King of Trolls, deserve all possible accolades.
Probably faxed the station a press release that included a phone number for confirmation. Instead of actually looking up number, intern probably just called the number provided. Public relations person simply confirmed.
Reminds me of great pranks at Heathrow calling for “Mai Kolleeg Jusvarted and Lefdaroom Dabastard, please come to the information desk.”
As I tell my kids, “I don’t care what anyone tells you, use you head.”
Elitist fools attempting to deflect attention off of their total lack of common sense.
I think we should focus this on NTSB chair Deborah Hersman. Anyone else notice her love for media facetime during the past week? Set up a news camera and watch her appear!
I remember those pranks; funny in the right circumstances.
Or this: Will Jack Mehoff please call the service desk.
She talked so slow and in a demeaning manner; my opinion.
Beats our writing ficticious names for library pass in our HS and hilarity ensued. Humor was more crass though...Having the evil Librarian confirming the whereabouts of Dick Hurtz or Heywood J....well you can guess the rest. Worked only one time but still a classic.
We howled with laughter! But this new one is funnier. :D
His name is probably Yue Soh Dum.
And so they remain UFOs, Unidentified Flying Orientals.
Many years ago a colleague of mine was going to a Chinese restaurant and wanted to know if I wanted anything. I said ‘yea bring me an order of won hung lo’. He said ok and walked out the door, returned a minute later, and told me I was disgusting. I admit I was, but it would have been funny if he ordered it.
I don’t know how many times I have heard ‘Mike Hunt’ paged at the Charlotte airport.
You wrote “(Hersman) talked so slow and in a demeaning manner.”
That’s a characteristic of democrat speaker training provided by Burson-Marsteller public relations firm. Hillary uses it too. (So does Diane Sawyer.) Another Burson characteristic is gesturing with a loose fist when speaking. Visualize wagging your finger at someone but loosely tucking your index finger back. Burson tells their speaker trainees that wagging a straight index finger is stern, and creating a tight closed fist is threatening, so they created this lame gesture. Watch Jay Carney for this. He’s the king of the loose fist. A-holes all!
I take it as arrogant and demeaning. And these are the same people that mock slow talking Texans.
"Congratulations Mr. and Mrs Frank Sippi!"
That's right folks, her married name was Mrs.Sippi (if you don't get it, say her name out loud)
Our government loves interns (just ask Klintoon) they are free labor but remember you get what you pay for.
Here’s the difference. If I say “Chink in the armor” I lose my career.
If a station allows “Wi Tu Lo” broadcast, what is the recourse?
There isn’t any. What controversy would ever get a station off the air?
“Has anyone seen Mike Hunt?”
“Mahlexa Krost and Ihav Tapee”.
My favorite name from the Lamont and Tonelli radio show is ‘Howie Feltersnatch
Naaahh.....that person at the station accomplished that all by their lonesome.
Yeah...something about something flowing downhill....
“Would Ima Dick please report to the front desk?”
No one has mentioned Seymore Butts, the famous writer on board who hid under seats..
Yes. Mike Hunt really gets around.
What about Eileen Dover and her brother Ben?
Either KTVU hires monumental idiots, or the staff got the joke but thought management had approved telling it on air.
In the town I grew up in, there was a “Warren Peter Construction Company”.
I wen to school with a girl named Anita Peters,
Growing up I used to hear ads for Dick Witham Ford in Waterloo, IA.
You folks are all forgetting the illustrious Frank N. Stein and his friend Chuck Wagon. Then there this guy Jim Bag, who works at a place called “The Locker Room.”
I worked with a Mennonite named Peter Harder. When I was first introduced to him it took everything I had to not laugh.
Show a little respect Dr. Seymore Butts, thank you very much and don’t forget his children Rosie and Harry! :D
Seems to be more and more true lately. Or at least it is presented as true.
Wat De Fuk?
Sweet femmine voice, “Paging Mike Hunt.....Mike Hunt please call the receptionist.”
Democrat speaker training. Does that company also train how to count on one hand by starting with your thumb?
Back when Pauline Frederick was the only woman in TV news, studies showed that viewers preferred authoritative delivery. This, along with societal factors kept women off the air and out of exec jobs. Along with Title IX and Equal Rights Amendment frenzy in the 70s came workshops and college offerings on women’s public speaking. Low and slow.
Interesting to learn of a corporate source of such training, or perhaps The Source.
