Steve Schalchlin would be the first to tell you he lives in a time of miracles, and about how hard that can be. In 1995, as his body wasted away from AIDS, he took the limited time in front of him as a challenge: he would write songs, make amends, fill his remaining days with life. And by the end, with his digestive system shut down, his figure skeletal, he was ready to die. Then he won a lottery for a new AIDS drug that had been rushed through the approval process. Almost overnight his health began to return, and with it, another, more open-ended, challenge: life...
Suddenly the future seemed like this long, empty road going toward the horizon, and I felt like, what am I gonna do with my life now? Mr. Schalchlin, 59, said the other day, still marveling at the turn of events. I had already accomplished all my goals that I had set for myself. And now I had this endless amount of time ahead of me, and I felt depressed.
Mr. Schalchlin no longer worries about dying of AIDS. But he has other health problems, more often seen in people 10 or 20 years older: kidney damage, diabetes, chronic fatigue, thyroid disease, partial paralysis in one eye and general weakness that limits him throughout the day.

But all I know is my beloved brother died of AIDS in 1995 and right now I'm feeling he just missed a cure. And it is making me very, very sad.
Yeah, my brother was a fagela, but please don't bash.
I just had to post this, and I'm sure the article is very interesting from a science/medical perspective.
Maybe I'll read the rest of it later.
Sorry for your loss.
If the obese and the smokers have to pay higher medical premiums under ObamaCare because of their “risky behavior,” surely homosexuals should as well. To do otherwise is overt discrimination because the expense to keep them alive is staggering.
Wonder if they would have done anything different.
When Mr. Davis, 62, learned he had H.I.V. in the late 1980s and then watched a partner die, he said, I partied harder. Took every drug in the world. I took all the money out of my 401(k) and spent it. He quit his job, ended up homeless and dependent on the citys H.I.V./AIDS Services Administration.
How about his "gay" bowel syndrome? Such a splendid lifestyle this mental disorder enables..........
The column is a sad one.
I’m sorry for your loss of your dear brother.
Thank you johnny!
Pardon my ignorance, but what is “gay bowel syndrome”? Too many damaging “thrusts” I’m guessing.
you know, the article cries out for martyrdom..
..I'm not in the mood......I've got arthritis seemingly in every joint of my body, including my hands...yet I need to keep working to pay the bills....and I'm nearly 60...
I feel the same way about these types of stories as I do about alcoholics seeking liver transplants at the taxpayer dime....where was the common sense when it was needed...
I have several members of my extended family that are gay...on bil has had several different partners, all have died, but I don't think from AIDS....one nephew is young and hopefully being very careful...
I also have a counsin in law dying of ALS...since her late 40's....not pretty....
I've understood that there was a whole mindset of HIV positive gay men "giving" HIV to others knowingly and many not HIV positive gay men "seeking" it......how twisted is that?...
its just difficult drumming up concern for these peoples' "middle age" problems....a lot of us have lived sensible lives, working, raising children, paying the tax man...when will get an article written about our trials and tribulations..
Thank you Gina, it just kind of freaked me out.
oh how I miss my brother, he was a great cut-up and while I wouldn’t say he was “conservative” he was equal opportunity and rather fearless.
While I’m very happy my staunch republican mom didn’t live to see the current admin I regret my brother didn’t. I’m sure his mockery of Obama and co. would have had us rolling on the floor.
same as normal woman have loose uterus?
you seen those pictures floating around on the inet that makes fun of women with too many kids? “vagina: it’s not a clown car”
we need to make fun of lesbians more, they’re more of a threat to our society being fem-nazis. I’m having trouble coming up with anything.
My brother is going through the same thing.
I’m very sorry to hear about your brother. I turned 18 in ‘78 and all my neighbors where I moved to were gay men. We started hanging out together and they were my friends and I loved them. They are almost all dead now. For several years.
The homosexual life is a sinful life and people living in it need to fall to their knees in submission to God, just like ALL of us need to for ALL of our sins. But it sure doesn’t mean we like to see them die and they need to hear the truth. Homosexuality, unlike any other sinful lifestyle, is applauded in society and those that say there’s hope; there’s a choice, are lambasted and destroyed. I truly feel for gays; they are trapped in a dark web.
“Regardless of the specific behavior being encouraged or punished, the end-result is more government control of the way individuals live their lives.”
Yes, and I’m sure we’ve all seen enough “twilight zones” to know how that turns out
So, I guessed right, huh?
Funny you mention that. I watched my 29 yo non drinking/drug taking wife die of liver cancer when she was denied a transplant the very same week Mickey Mantle got his....
“I also have a counsin in law dying of ALS...since her late
Oh dear, that is really the worst. My mom’s friend died of that. She was the most dignified, even queenly woman. The first clue was she “went off” in a local shop, so bad that they called the cops. At first we thought is was just a menopausal thing (again, don’t bash me) but it was way worse than that. It was all dreadful.
And then not that long after that my brother’s good friend (just a friend) died of AIDS. He was such a little mouse that guy, you really wouldn’t think such a thing would affect him.
And those 2 deaths got to me; but of course there were more to come, sadly.
Yea it was quite the slap in the face.
He sounds like a really fun and funny guy (this communist administration would certainly have given him plenty of fodder!).
I know you’ll always miss him.
Something to consider for your brother (and the other poster with arthritis)is that most of these symptoms (high blood pressure, depression, diabetes, arthritis, and many others) are caused by magnesium deficiency. Mag is alkaline and causes inflammation to subside. It also is necessary for calcium to dissolve and absorb. Arthritis is calcified crystals around the joints.
Take 800-900 mg of mag malate or mag glyinate per day and you’ll see huge strides in general health.
thank you for posting this... just recently i was wondering about the treatment of AIDS and how people are living with the disease now a days... specifically, i was wondering when treatment started prolonging lives to the extent that it now does...
I’m sorry for you AppyPappay. You have my sympathy.
vagina: its not a clown car
LOL, ok that’s bad, but it’s kind of funny too.
You are welcome, it is amazing they’ve made such progress.
Via “hot air” I should have given them a tip o’ the hat when I posted. That shows how freaked out I really was.
I am very sorry luv for your loss. It could happen to ANY of us. So sorry. May your experience help fight for a cure. You are Loved. So was your beloved Brother.
Sure, and no doubt that a. they will go too far and b. they will exempt themselves
“If the obese and the smokers have to pay higher medical premiums under ObamaCare because of their risky behavior, surely homosexuals should as well.”
Homosexuals will probably get free medical care. The little faggots ought to be paying every nickel they earn to insurance as they wanted “gay marriage” simply to get employer spousal medical benefits. It was during the early 1980s the little fags started contracting and dying of AIDS they decided to demand spousal medical insurance.
Homosexuality is a choice; a lifestyle they practice. It is not a genetic disorder as proven by identical twins where one choses homosexuality but the other does not.
Their sexual perversions know no bounds.
just start every lesbian joke with “pardon me,sir”...
Sweet Jesus Norm, what a loss! I Pray you finally get closure.
I’ve long since dealt with it overall. But it still irks me. Got plenty of med issues of my own so I tend to stay up on med research/advances. What I’ll never get past is that normal people/illnesses get put by the wayside in favor of self inflicted idiocy as long as fame or a cause de’celebre can be exploited. THAT really gets me good.
But then such is our world.
Furthermore, if the nanny gummint can ban high-capacity sodas and tobacco, why can't they at least discourage homosexuality, if not ban it outright?
Oh, that's right. We're only a "collective" when it moves the agenda to the left.
Not a single bit.
My beloved brother-in-law also died of AIDS in 1992. He got it in the very early years. I’m so glad they’ve got the drugs now to extend lives, but it is also sad what those people still have to live with, especially the depression and loneliness. You may not approve of the lifestyles that resulted in the HIV but you have to have compassion as a fellow human being and thus fellow sinner. Remembering that we’re all in need of God’s grace pretty much levels everything out.
Thank you for posting this article. I’m so sorry about your brother. It’s hard to lose those we love, no matter the reason.
Years ago when I was a much more virile man I enjoyed fishing fast moving streams in my hip waders. I knew from being told and personal experience that deep fast moving water can be a real danger. There were times when I barley escaped from my foolishness. I still keep in my mind those fishing lessons as to many other happenings in one’s life. As such I view premeditated reckless and life threatening actions/choices in very much the same light. I can’t get caring emotional about people who by their own choice involve themselves in dangerous unhealthy activities.
Think “adult diapers but not for pee”.
Evens everything out?
Nope, it does not. We all need God’s mercy but engaging in utterly egregious behavior means such a person is rejecting His mercy. Everything is not all the same.
So did this Steve feller give up same sex sodomy or does he carry on with the “gay” life?
Rhetorical question, maybe the answer is in the (no doubt very lenghty) NYT article. I guess I could click the link.
