IRVINE (CBSLA.com) The teen identified by the Orange County Coroner as the driver in a single-car crash that killed five teens including himself on Memorial Day, was driving without a license, the California Department of Motor Vehicles told CBS2/KCAL9 Wednesday.
According to records, 17-year-old Abdurlrahman M. Alyahyan, a senior at University High School in Irvine, did not have a valid California drivers license when his car hit a tree and caught fire Monday evening on Jamboree Road and Island Lagoon Drive in Newport Beach.
DMV officials tell CBS2/KCAL9 that Alyahyan was in the process of getting a provisional license and had yet to prove his legal status in the United States, a requirement for any type of drivers license.
Despite the coroners report, the Newport Beach Police Department has not confirmed that Alyahyan was the driver of the vehicle.
Alyahyan, Nozad Al Hamawendi, 16, a junior at Irvine High School; Cecilia Zamora, 17, a junior at Irvine High; and sisters Robin Cabrera, 17, and Aurora Cabrera, 16, both of Irvine High, were also killed in the accident.
Four teens were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fifth was declared dead at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash.
Students and staff returned to the Irvine and University high school campuses Wednesday, where memorials had been set up.
We normally have four counselors and one psychologist. Today we have 25 and more will be called as needed, Ian Hanigan of the Irvine Unified School District said.
I was reading somewhere else there was another teen who was supposed to be in that car.
But for some reason, his father would not let him go. He had to stay home.
I’m guessing he is thanking God he wasn’t allowed.
Interesting name...
Unless all the counselors are telling the students, "This is what happens when you drive like an idiot!" they might as well just hold an assembly and read to them from "The Hunger Games" or something.
Teenagers drive like idiots. Teenagers get in cars with other teenagers who don't have a license and drive like idiots. I sympathize with the parents, especially if they tried to stop them.
Interesting name.
Sounds Amish to me.
Irvine is filled with interesting names...
My first thought, too.
Such a senseless loss of life. We’ll be seeing some of this in PA. with prom season underway.
May these children rest in peace.
Middle name: Mohammed.
What a surprise!
Who thinks that having a driver’s license improves your ability to drive a car when you are under the influence? It appears that he would have had one had there not been a technicality. Maybe being an Armenian should have disqualified him, as some here would seem to think.
The area around U.C. Irvine is crawling with mooselimbs. It is an affluent area with some effluent type people.
He took down four infidels with him. Do you suppose he will have 288 virgins waiting.
Lucky for the kid whose dad made him stay home and study. I’m pretty sure there weren’t seat belts for six in that car.
Not that it would have mattered in this crash.
I live in Irvine. Very educated area, very low crime. Some Moslems; lots and lots of folks from Asia (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Indians). The high schools these kids went to are some of the best in the state.
Saw his picture and wonder. Was he a suicide driver?
Yup, his father told him he had to stay home to study for his finals. I’m sure he was pissed at his father at the time. Not so much now. Lucky kid.
