The Tonight Show had a great band during the Carson years.

No offense to anyone, but I would have guessed that all of the members of Doc Severinsen's band had been dead for years...
Abe Vigoda, on the other hand...

For anyone wondering just how good this guy was, listen to these:
Footprints of the Giant
Court of the Crimson King
Each song has a fairly long intro... Mr. Shaughnessy comes in at 1:51 in Footprints and at 2:51 in Court.
This album was recorded in 1970. A long time ago.

And a class act as well. A real gentleman, from all accounts.

Pete Christlieb and Ernie Watts are still gigging.

Be my guest, that’s how I got it.

Thanks for those. You can hear the recording was taken off vinyl.

I used to love that band. Tommy Newsome was a hoot (he died in 2007). And it was fun when they played “Stump The Band”.

You can hear the recording was taken off vinyl. Oh yeah. No computers in the signal chain back then!
The YouTube version is pretty poor; I think the person who put it up may have recorded it using microphones in front of speakers.
Because it's lacking in high-end fidelity, it fails to show Ed Shaughnessy's driving ride cymbal work.
Obviously, Shaughnessy was not the showman Buddy Rich was. What always got me about him was his fantastic precision and power; he was the consummate session man, driving the band, generating the energy, making everyone else sound better.

making everyone else sound better. That's the essence of a true musician.

That's the essence of a true musician. Yup. The Tonight Show Band was pretty much entirely comprised of that type of musician.
The "A-list" session scene is LA is out of this world.
I guess the A-listers of Nashville and New York are pretty good too!

Court of the crimson king? Original drummer for KC was Michael Giles who recorded that album.
