I saw the show a while back.

It was surprisingly convincing but I’m not an idiot so I wasn’t fooled.

There are so many allegedly fact-based shows out there that suggest that science fiction or fantasy are real so this doesn’t surprise me. I mean, you have the “History” channel that devotes whole series to the idea that aliens built the ancient wonders or ruled ancient civilizations, or that certain fantasy creatures like dragons actually lived. Certain people are always going to want to believe in mermaids or pixies or magic.

Come on down to Florida, drink about a dozen adult beverages of your choice, then go swimming with the manatees, and damn, if you won’t see mermaids..and probably want to kiss them as well..

I've watched the Animal Planet show on Mermaids. You can watch it here.

It's a pretty compelling presentation, especially for those who think that the Aquatic Ape Theory" to has a degree of plausibility, as I do.

Of course, there are plenty who think the Aquatic Ape Theory is complete bunk.

Still, the Animal Planet show is definitely worth watching.

Mermaids are real but Jesus is your imaginary friend.

Wasn’t it Disney that came up with Lemmings running into the sea every so often? My understanding is they don’t.

Sometimes I think they run this crap just to test how far the dumbing down has gotten.

When I saw the show my critical thinking skills went into overdrive and dismantled the fantasy. The first thing I noticed was the portrayal of these mermaids with a head, neck, shoulders and arms just like modern humans. Those features would be terribly inefficient for a marine life form. God wouldn’t produce it and evolution would eliminate it.

My dear Miranda, sometimes having an open mind means you have holes in your head.

"Animal Planet 'documentary' persuades many Twitter Users that Mermaids Are Real"

Twitter users...Well, that certainly explains everything that has happened since 2008.

"you are closed minded if you think something like that couldn't exist."

Well... her 'statement' is obviously and quite logically correct. Closed minded men have declared many things non-existent only to 'discover' that they were there all along.

That being said, the 'open minded' also realized that it is very unlikely that a mermaid such as the ones in our movies and cartoons existed, unless one also believes in minotaurs, and winged unicorns.

From Wiki

The misconception of lemming “mass suicide” is long-standing and has been popularized by a number of factors. It was well enough known to be mentioned in The Marching Morons, a 1951 short story by Cyril M. Kornbluth. In 1955, Disney Studio illustrator Carl Barks drew an Uncle Scrooge adventure comic with the title “The Lemming with the Locket”. This comic, which was inspired by a 1953 American Mercury article, showed massive numbers of lemmings jumping over Norwegian cliffs. Even more influential was the 1958 Disney film White Wilderness, which won an Academy Award for Documentary Feature, in which staged footage was shown with lemmings jumping into certain death after faked scenes of mass migration. A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary, Cruel Camera, found the lemmings used for White Wilderness were flown from Hudson Bay to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they did not jump off the cliff, but were in fact launched off the cliff using a turntable.

A few years back, Discovery/Animal Planet did a similar “documentary” on dragons, which was, IMHO, quite well done:

I watched it last night for a few minutes. All a staged lie. It was so easy to tell that everyone being interviewed was lying and rehashing scripted lines. The micro tremors in their voices, the pauses integrity speech, eye movements, etc...even a teenager could tell they were lying and she wasn’t even trained on lie detection...lol. And then those stupid “Blair Witch “ style videos where you could tell that the guys were walking right up to the mermaid laying on the beach, it’s hand twitching as he pokes it, then it raising up and screaming at him...lol

Actually I think the show was made to see how gullible people are and if they can be led to believe anything through the magic of media. I’m surprised their wasn’t one of those TV pollsters calling me up to see what I thought about the show afterwards...lol

I have suggestion for why this 'concept' is so popular.

It's because we can't face the fact that our STUPID(compared to our 'oh so powerful' tekmolokigal advances) ANCESTORS built something that we no longer can.

A fifth of British teenagers believe Sir Winston Churchill was a fictional character, while many think Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur and Eleanor Rigby were real, a survey shows.

Actually its would be more accurate to say that we could build the pyramids if we chose to do so. We just don’t have any reason to do so and we certainly wouldn’t do it they way they did 5000 years ago.
