As for taking God's name in vain, that is off limits but keep it in the context of the story he is telling and you may see it differently. He isn't saying it, but quoting a fictitious viewer. I don't really know if that "crosses the line."
I didn't start writing this to defend Colbert, who I have never seen and don't even know. But it occurred to me while writing that the only offense I see is the insinuations he makes may be false, so I plead ignorance on that.
Any time I hear someone say, “OMG” I like to ask, which one is that?
Using vulgar language to describe bodily functions is not “cursing.” Cursing is wishing evil upon someone, especially wishing his soul to be eternally damned.
All of those S(omething)-words are simply vulgar, rude, or socially, inappropriate, and are no more sinful than any other instances of poor manners.

Cursing, in the Biblical sense, does not equate to “curse words” in the modern sense. Biblically, we’re talking real curses, such as “may your entrails be ridden with worms”, etc. Basically, wishing bad things upon others, not simple profanity.
I’m a Catholic woman in my late 40s who tries hard to be good. This includes trying to avoid rudeness of all kinds, including inappropriate language. However, it doesn’t include confusing tacky behavior with blasphemy.
Going to Walmart in one’s pajamas is tacky, but it’s not the same as going naked. (This is a loose analogy to the subject of cursing vs. vulgarity, not a precise one.)

Cursing, course language, crude joking, bad language, using profanity, the s-word, the f-word, the GD words, etc. etc. etc...
All are sins. There are commandments not to use those words, and any distinction placing the GD word as worse than the mf word for instance, is beyond stupid.

I'll fully admit that I have a bad mouth at times. There are two terms I don't use. God's last name isn't damn, and I don't use the female "c" word.

As I’ve been saying - to place special significance on abstaining from the GD word, but being less than worried about using the f-word or the s-word is beyond belief.
Defiling one’s self by the use of coarse and vulgar language shows a lack of capacity for self-respect, no less disrespect for those within earshot, and disrespect is not an expression of love. I plead guilty to being an offender and must watch myself very carefully to avoid behavior acquired by habit.
Growing up in an age when “shock comedy” became the norm did not help and I'm at the point in my life where I don't find it at all humorous, but offensive. I had to grow into that and away from popular culture that has degraded and debased our civilization. It barely even qualifies as “civil” any longer.
Obviously Colbert’s biblical knowledge is so limited that he does not know (perhaps doesn’t care) that Jesus never got to be ‘old and pot bellied’ having been crucified in his very early thirties. And, it is hard to get pot bellied if you are walking EVERYWHERE you go and not riding everywhere in a limo, or on a proletarian subway train, bus, or taxi.
The Comedy Channel is systematically destroying the Republican Party among young voters. The GOP clearly has no answer - nor any clear idea how badly it is being hurt. A lot of younger people don’t really like Obama, but voted for him anyway because they believe the media’s GOP caricatures.
Another thing to ponder is, we shouldn't be a stumbling block to a brother or sister. If you are saying the eff word or talking about feces or urine, what must you brother that is watching you as a Christian, think? They are always evaluating you and what you say and do. If Jesus isn't serious to you, what would he think he needs to get serious about Jesus? Talking nasty probably has done more damage to the Kingdom than any other sin. It supports and attitude that we aren't really serious. We all fall short, but we must try to at least glorify God in public and not shame Him. There is no place for bodily functions while witnessing for God.

They don’t have a big hit TV show right now. Some of the gags are pretty funny, and really they’re aimed more at Hollywood than religion, that “immaculate audition” line is pretty solid.
Well, there is a difference between profanity and taking the Lord’s name in vain. The former is in bad taste and is ill-mannered, but is not necessarily sinful. The latter is sinful. Period.
