KDKA ^ | March 25, 2013

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local family is accused of beating up a bar security guard, after a DJ wouldn’t play the song they had requested.

It happened at the bar Savoy in the Strip District, this past weekend.

Police say 29-year-old Dion Daye Jr. ,who requested the song, was arrested, in addition to two family members, 50-year-old Dion Daye Sr. and 25-year-old Dorian Daye, after they all teamed up and attacked a security guard.

The DJ’s refusal to play their song allegedly upset the trio which was asked to leave. Then Dion Daye Jr. allegedly punched the security guard. The fight then escalated with family members using objects in the bar to continue attacking the security guard.

The security guard is currently in the hospital, police say.

I take it they weren’t requesting a country song.

What song? Because I could support either side depending on the song.

So... a DJ got pounded by 3 double-D’s.

It has nothing to do with strippers. It’s a district that is primarily occupied by produce stores.

I think that's like the term 'Strip Mall', except it's downtown.

"What’s the “Strip District” ?

If you saw the Jack Reacher movie, the scene where Tom Cruise beats up the five guys single handedly. That was filmed in the strip district. The funny part is the bar where the scene starts is a famous bar in the southside of Pittsburgh. Then they step "outside" to fight and its on the other side of town in the strip district....

Nothing to do with stripping. It’s a strip of land with:
“a historic market district with many ethnic food purveyors, some art studios, antique dealers, unique boutiques, and other businesses setting up shop where trains once delivered produce by the ton. The Strip District comes alive primarily on weekends during the summer months when street vendors are selling their wares, the open-air farmer’s markets are in full swing, and party-goers sit outside and enjoy a drink.” (wikipedia)

The orig Primanti Bros sandwich shop is there. I noticed people selling what were probably bootleg CDs...T shirt shops etc.

Back in the day, the Strip District was a great place to go clubbing, until the Amish moved in. Hasn’t been the same since Donzi’s closed. Now the action has moved back to the South Side.

Off topic, but why is the tv station there KDKA? I thought radio and tv stations east of the Mississippi started with a W.

Pittsburgh has more than one TV station.

As to this one in particular, it was originally called WDTV, but after a purchase in the 1950s changed its call letters to match KDKA radio, which was the first commercial radio station in the world.

After the sale closed in January 1955, Westinghouse changed WDTV's call letters to KDKA-TV, after Westinghouse's pioneering radio station KDKA (1020 AM).[8] As such, it became one of the few stations east of the Mississippi River with a "K" call sign.

KDKA was the very first commercial radio station, and went operational in 1920.

I think they made up their own call letters. There was no standard at the time.

I am afraid I must report your use of cheap puns to the moderator. This is a serious site and is dedicated to political thought and theory; not this sort of tomfoolery.

In future, young fellow, remember

I’ll accept my fate whatever it is just for the transient joy, even in jest, of being referred to as “young”. I’m so old I outgrew my senility.

Not a good enough excuse. I'm so old you would have to climb 350 feet up one of your redwoods to see the initials I carved as a boy.
