I have a question. Having seen only two episodes, I don’t know much about the series. How does Daryl use the crossbow? Its a good SHTF weapon, but it doesn’t seem like a good zombie weapon, because it would have to go through the skull.

In the show it seems to go through skulls pretty easily. Probably not that true to real life, but it looks cool! The main thing is that it’s a quiet weapon, and these zombies (Walkers) are attracted to sounds/noise.

In the zombie apocalypse, isn’t everything deteriorating, so it would be easier for an arrow to go through a skull, correct?

In the show it seems to go through skulls pretty easily. Probably not that true to real life, but it looks cool! The main thing is that it’s a quiet weapon, and these zombies (Walkers) are attracted to sounds/noise.

It seems like a good weapon to have, because guns have limited ammo, and these bolts can be reused. but when I think about shooting a zombie in the head, then going back and retrieving the bolt, without contracting zombie-ness, which is usually portrayed as communicable through fluids, I think I would just leave the bolt where it is and make more.

Actually, it is a good weapon for that. The zombie is caused by a parasite/virus that has infected the brain of the dead. The only way to re-kill them is with a severe head wound -- bullet, arrow, knife/ax/sword, etc.

An arrow from a crossbow can penetrate deep.

So they cut off Herschel's leg for no reason? I think there's more to the virus that I don't know or understand yet ... they all carry it, but in a dormant state so no one turns until they die ... UNLESS they are bitten by walkers who have the ACTIVE virus which will kill you and turn you immediately?

IMHO, active zombie virus would be on Daryl's arrows and would infect you if it contacted an open wound.

lethal bites kill you, then you come back.

nonlethal bites kill you eventually if you can’t chop off the bitten appendage, and you come back.

it’s something you have to kind of overlook a little becuase of the whole their fluids don’t turn you but a bite does, kind of thin logic.

There could be complications like the Komodo Dragon’s bite. There’s toxin in its venom, but the germs in its saliva are what kill you eventually.
The zombie’s mouth could easily harbor bacteria that result in the fever that the infected suffer, such as Morgan saying his wife had a 104-105 fever before dying. The zombies carry the virus, but also another infection that kills you so the zombie virus can take over.
