.22 LR the new gold standard?
vanity

Posted on 01/29/2013 4:44:13 PM PST by hadaclueonce

.22 LR ammo is on back order at all wholesellers. Who is buying it up?

Oil speculators?

Late to come to the party preppers?

The Feds?

Price on the secondary market has gone up 5 times here in Texas.

When the TG&Y in Dodge City, Kansas closed, they cleared everything out starting at 10% off everything. I had seen these type closeouts before and didn’t expect any really good deals so didn’t stop in.

When it got down to 70% off, I decided to go in just to see if anything of any value was left. There wasn’t any except I was shocked to see a pile of .22 LR Remington High Speed in the case.

I have no idea what happened but suspect some employee had hid some in back and waited until the deal was too good to pass up and brought it out. It is also possible that some manager found it and brought it out. Anyway there it was.

I got out my credit card and bought 650 boxes for a little over $200. Back then the retail price on them was 99 cents.

That worked out to 32,500 rounds of .22 LR ammo. I have since added at least that much more so I must have around 60,000 rounds minus the few hundred I have fired since then.

I have a good supply of 9mm, 6.5 Swedish Mauser (most of it is Lapua Match), and 12 gauge. I have adequate supply of 20 gauge, .45 auto (right now I don’t even have a .45 gun).

I am under supplied in 8mm Mauser, 7.65 Tokarev, .380. and .40 S&W.

I have a good supply of several pistol and revolver rounds and no longer have a gun to fire it.

I will probably try to sell some of the .22 if demand keeps up.

“Anyone come across a high-cap mag for a 10/22 that actually works?”

Nope.

“People are going to .22 for cheapest target practice. Only now it’s not so cheap.”

Not really. I find every day the cartridges for target shooting at reasonable prices, it’s the hollow points that are totally out until a company gets some and then it’s out faster than a lightning strike.

Yes, absolutely. Ruger finally came out with their own 25 round magazine, the BX-25 that works PERFECTLY. Outperforms Butler Creek or Promag by a mile.

The one great advantage the Ruger BX-25 has over any other high cap 10/22 magazine is that you can actually take it apart and clean it.

Before the recent craziness, they were selling for under $30. Sadly, like everything else these days, they're unobtainable.

Last week I just got my Swedish Mauser back from my brother who claimed it was his for the longest time. It is a family heirloom that I want to give to my son. He told me to come and get it because the cartridges cost $100 per box. I went to Fleet Farm and picked up two boxes for $36.00. It was my first deer hunting rifle.

Before all this started I had been buying a Box or two of the CCI Mini Mags at Academy for about $24 for a box of of 375. A week or so ago they were on the Cabelas site for $49 a box. I’m glad That I’m not empty handed, but I sure wish I had a few more boxes. Good luck.

OTOH, I went to a local gun shop that had lots of all kinds of ammo behind the counter. .45, 9mm, .380, .223, .308, and .22 lr. Then I noticed the signs: “Ammo sales ONLY with purchase of a firearm,” and “No bulk .22 lr sales.”

For those who want handgun ammo for target practice, Cheaper than Dirt has boxes of 500 in the .22 LR Aguila Super Colibri. This is subsonic .22 LR, so it’s not for hunting or self-defense regardless of shot placement, but it’s good for target practice without flinching (for those young enough to flinch at a .22). It will not cycle a semi-automatic (probably), at least not my semi-auto, but it’s still good for training.

“Like I told Marcella awhile back... IF you can get them now, Rugers own made in the USA BX-25 25 shot magazine is the only one I have found that works flawlessly.”

I said in a post before this one, I ordered the Ruger one from the Ruger company website for $30+ and they took the order to fill it when they get some. They accepted the order so they know some will come in.

That thing sounds like a pellet gun!

Yep. -- Perhaps that's the reason that suppressors are regulated by the BATFE.

Are you sure it was Mini Mag? I bought some from Dick’s and Cabela’s for around $27 per box around three weeks ago. I picked up a 375 pack of what I thought were Mini Mags at Cabela’s and when I went to pay for them they scanned in at $49 per box and then I realized they were CCI but not the Mini Mags.

The picture of the box looked the same as what I had been buying. It’s possible that they were Maxi Mags (.22 mag) because they’re in a similar box.

I bought a lot of my .22LR the same way, specials and sales and case lots. With the kids and grandkids, I go through more .22LR than M&Ms. You can't ever have enough with young ones around.

They is a shooting bunch.

Ruger is making factory 25 round magazines. I have two but haven’t tried them yet. The reviews are good. I would try them but I can’t bring myself to shoot any of my ammunition right now. Come to think of it, you probably can’t find any of them anyway.

“People are going to .22 for cheapest target practice. Only now it’s not so cheap.”

I don't think its so much for target practice as its being bought up by folks who are late to the party and it's dawning on them that the “bitter clingers” may have been right.

A .22 LR doesn't kill outright by shock like a 45 ACP or 30-06. It kills by “stabbing” so shot placement is of prime importance. It is an extraordinarily “dirty” round due to the external lubrication that is found on many .22lr rounds (read infection). When a person gets a extra hole from a .22 that God didn't give them, that hastens a long stay in the medical system provided a major system wasn't hit. The recipient may not survive the hit long term but are capable of wreaking considerable damage short term. As they say in real estate location, location, location

$49? Are you kidding?

When Marcella was looking for .22 hollow points I dug out some of my .22LR and I have a box of 100 (minus 5) of the CCI Mini Mag .22LR and it has a price sticker on it for $5.99.

Prices have gotten stupid.
