They had been guarded by a large force of SS troopers, most of whom had disappeared in the night.

At the end of the war, the SS moved around prisoners to get out of going to the front -- they claimed that they were too busy "guarding" prisoners to be sent into combat. The SS typically either ran off and left the prisoners alone, or handed them over to a unit of elderly Volksstrum, right before the allied troops arrived.

Never heard of that one, and I’m certainly not averse to subtitles. Two of my favorite films, “Babette’s Feast” and “Das Boot”, have subtitles. GREAT movies! I’ll look for the movie on Netflix.
